Work up a load duplicating the Buffalo Bore 230 gr FMJ FN in 45 Super

230gr Dead Nuts FMJ FN
9.2 Longshot
CCI 350 Primer
Starline 45 Super brass
1.223”
1100 FPS in 4.6” KKM
Notice cleaning afterwards bore fouling was very minimal in barrel probably due to the excellent CCI 350 primer.

I bet a XTP at 1100 fps would be the ticket!
Good Bullet 230 XTP but not for Alaska trail same for 240/250 XTP that I considered the best for non dangerous game.
The 230 XTP was designed for +P velocity at most . Expect massive expansion and poor penetration at 45 Super Velocity.

Yes you're right, I meant for defense against others. For the trail a cast is awesome.

Bullet design like the 230 XTP and others for 45 ACP velocity levels are designed to expand and penetrate a certain level . Exceed the velocity level the bullet was designed for and excessive expansion occurs thus hinders penetration. I would not suggest a 45 super for home defense as double taps are slow due to excessive recoil . For SD suggest stick with 45 ACP and 45 ACP+P levels in performance.
Yes for the Trail especially in Alaska for Bears the heavy Hardcast 250 rule especially the Rim Rock TS RNFP. Even the excellent 250gr XTP is great in the 45 Super but for big bear protection lacks the penetration due to expansion.

Absolutely. I would probably never opt for a non-monometal HP for bears.
For Black Bears the 240/250 XTP would be excellent in 45 Super. Both bullets will retain their weight and have sufficient penetration. 20 plus inches. But not for Grizzly !
