Getting into the 35 Whelen Game

That's a Bergara, right? It is popular over here - but it usually needs some work on the rail. If it doesn't shoot, look there first. Then pay close attention where you rest the forearm. If it works out for you as it is: congratulations! I - and hundreds of others, had to do some fine tuning

    Scoped the 1895 Marlin

Edit to my post: we only have one Max pressure for all. Which is rather low. You could go higher with modern rifles, but then you break the law the other way. Tipped bullets manage, but then you are limited to two bullets in a lever gun... The lighter lead free bullets don't help, either PS...

    You just cannot fix stupid.

I reload for 20 years now. And honestly - for our hunts over here there is too much debate and too little practice. Average shot distance is less than 100y. Yes - some shoot longer. And they usually know what they are doing. For the rest? It is more about choosing the right bullet. It simply...

    You just cannot fix stupid.

For anything larger than our roe deer, we need at least 6,5 mm and 2000J @ 100 m. Whatever 2000J is in FP.... For roe, 1000j @100m So 223 is ok, but for nothing larger. But it seems to be more dangerous than 30-06...

    You just cannot fix stupid.

Being a German I have to say that you leaned heavily on the 8x57. But yeah . I am currently out waiting for boar. I used to bring my 30-06, now the 6,5 Creedmoor. I sold my 223 because it is not considered enough for big game over here. Go figure

    Target bullets for deer

I use several. In 30-06 it is called LOS hunter tactical. A European producer. Cheap, precise and the front part fragments into some bigger pieces. Works more like a lead bullet. In 6,5 Creedmoor the Lehigh controlled chaos. Works similar, but with smaller fragments. I think I will quit them...

    Target bullets for deer

With classic match bullets, I would fear that the tiny hollow point might not be enough for expansion from time to time. With a tipped one that should not happen. Since I have to hunt lead free, I will never know...

    Scoped the 1895 Marlin

Everything bigger than our small roe deer requires more than 2000 Joule@100 m here. Even though the 45-70 does the job, it doesn't meet that requirement with flat tips and isn't allowed for big game here. Does that make sense? No. But that's the law...

    Scoped the 1895 Marlin

Same here. I am 100% sure it would all it needs on driven hunts where shots on moving game is within 50y. Law says it is not ok...

    Scoped the 1895 Marlin

Nice. Unfortunately the 45-70 is not considered adequate for big game with lead free bullets over here. We have just one pressure limit for all according to CIP and that is the lowest. You can't meet 2000J @100 m most of the times. Silly law, but that's why I don't have one for driven hunts :-(

    260 COAL

If you don't want to use a dowel - why not the cut-neck method? Or making a dummy with a bullet set far out and setting it deeper, until the bolt closes without force?

    Killing time at the range

I think they redesigned the base quite a bit some time ago on the BT. Cut open, it looks like the AB, just without bonding. Wall thickness is substantial at the base, so unless the bullet tumbles, it should retain quite a bit of the core. Ah - just saw in the other thread that someone said...

    New Benelli entry model

I have an autoloader. For home defense, I would still use the o/u. We have to store guns unloaded and that one is quicker. If two shots aren't enough, I am in trouble anyway due to home layout. Luckily, our bad guys usually don't have firearms, so I might get away with my last birthday present

    6.5CM deer bullet choice

Under 100y I would take a tougher bullet, too. If I wouldn't have to hunt lead free, the above mentioned gold dot would be my first choice. If it doesn't group, any 140 gr, preferably bonded. The Creed isn't laser fast, but I assume a fast 120 gr or less in simple cup and core might damage more...

How many left-hand shooters/hunters do we have here?

Left eye dominant, left hander. So far, so good. But I developed a tremor in my left hand - family heritage. So for pistols I am switching to right handed, rifle/shotgun is ok as lefty. But I write with the right hand and can shoot bows, rifles and shotguns right handed (less training, so not...

    Double Rifles

We have a rich history with double rifles here in Germany and funnily enough, some are chambered in 45-70. Since wild boar are constantly on the rise (African swine pest might see to that, though), they are still - or again - pupular on driven hunts. Cartridges range from 7x57R over 7x65R and...

What does "accurate rifle" mean to you?

Our bread and butter roe deer is rather small. I guess close to your coyotes? For them, I definitely want sub moa and I don't let anyone go out with ammo I load if it doesn't meet that. I do it with a 6,5 Creedmoor Savage On the other hand, my Tikka in 30-06 was able to produce fantastic...
