    Back to muzzle loading

I have the same rifle. You should be able to find a load with 80-100gr FFg and a MaxiBall or MaxiHunter that will shoot pretty well. Round ball may also be an option, or the PA conical that someone else mentioned. Just make sure you clean it good after shooting, or it will turn to a pile of rust...

    Back to muzzle loading

It depends on your barrel's twist. If you have a slow twist (1:60, etc.), a patched round ball is your only option. A medium twist (1:48, etc.) may handle some conical bullets, if they aren't too long. A fast twist (1:28, etc.) is designed for shooting conical bullets. You need to know what your...

    Tractor Supply

I've never seen any shooting gear at TSC. Salt blocks, trail cameras, cover scent, etc. but that's about it.

    Heart Attack while Hunting

Come on, you old jarhead. Don't be going AWOL on us! Glad you are doing better, and this wasn't a disaster. Prayers for a speedy recovery.

    Burris Fullfield II

I've bought one or two of mine from this place. https://shopdunns.com/product/burris-fullfield-e1-4-5-14x42mm-ballistic-plex-reticle-rifle-scope-200349/

    Burris Fullfield II

I think that was me. I used to have a number of Nikon Prostaff scopes, and lately I've begun migrating to Burris as my "bang for the buck" scopes, with Nikon out of the market. Although I've got several of the Fullfield E1 models and two of the Droptines, I do not have any of the Fullfield II's...

FOR SALE Marlin X7 270 Winchester

I have two of them in .243, and my buddy has a 7-08. They are all good shooters. Very underrated rifles, and a shame they quit making them. Better than anything Remington has put out over the last 15 years.

    #11 Percussion Cap Shortage

Not sure why you aren't seeing them there. They have been pretty well available here. I've seen them at Walmart and my LGS on the regular. I've got probably 500 on hand, so I'm good for a bit.

    Trapped again

Whereabouts in Kentucky? Lots of bourbon breweries around here.

    My new best buddy

He looks like a handsome pup. I like GSD's and collies, so I'm sure he was a good one.

    Trapped again

We don't need or use our wood stove much here in Kentucky, as it rarely gets cold enough for long enough to justify the mess to fire it up and clean it out. However, when we do get it going there is nothing I like better than to stretch out on the couch nearby and just soak up that heat. I will...

    My new best buddy

He's long and tall, and it looks to me like he could stand to put on a few pounds yet. He goes to the vet on Friday, I'm curious to see what he weighs.

    My new best buddy

After some consideration, my wife and I decided that our empty nest was entirely too quiet, so we decided to adopt a 4yo boy. Say hello to Duke. 🙂 He's only been here 2 days, and he's already got this "work from home" stuff figured out. Looking forward to happy trails and happy tails. Brian

    Rifle scopes

I'm with ShadeTree. As an Eastern hunter, I'm fairly limited in the range that I'm shooting, I'm not taking long, long shots. So, the glass just has to be reliable and "good enough." I used to be a Nikon guy, as they offered a good-quality scope at reasonable prices. I still have Nikon's on...

    45-70, 300gr bullets, IMR 4198

Guy, The modern Marlin 1895 is essentially the same as the Marlin 336 action (as is the Henry 45-70). The 336 action is their .30-30 action, which has a limit of 42k PSI. Assuming there is enough material around the barrel threads, there's no reason to believe that the 1895 action won't handle...

    Importance of proper shooting form

I would be most happy to give Ms. Lawrence some "hands-on" instruction, as a public service. 😉

    45-70, 300gr bullets, IMR 4198

Yes, and as you can see, the Hodgdon starting load is 2.7gr above the max load from Sierra. It's crazy.

    45-70, 300gr bullets, IMR 4198

We all know that there is little rhyme or reason between the data from one source to another. But assuming that you are loading for a modern lever action, how high have you personally pushed this combo safely? And is that the load that you settled on? I was testing some loads in my Henry this...

    .360 Buckhammer

Nothing wrong with the ML, but those second shots are a bit challenging. Better make the first one count. 🙂
