Hey all! Sorry, I don't mean to be beating a dead topic... But Now that summer is coming to a close and the fire-ban has been lifted in the area where I shoot I figured I wanna try this slug with Reloader 26. Yup I'm eating my words... Sorry for being a little hard headed... After all this...
Thank you Polaris for the great info!! I'm looking forward to loading up some turkey loads. I have a lyman book on the way. I think I still am still gonna use wraps to help prevent the pellet deformation of the bbs that aren't in the shot cup running down the barrel(bore scrubbing). Do wraps...
For my turkey loads... First, I wanna say I've read on this and it all boils down to you can buy better factory turkey loads unless you're reloading TSS. I know it takes some work with patterns etc, but I get a great sense of satisfaction putting animals on the table that I've killed with...
I loaded 5 more shells using less crimp pressure and I got the shells crimp ok. (y) I guess I was using a bit too much pressure. Thanks for the help!
Does this crimp look good?
Ok thanks for the input! So I went the cheap route to start with and bought the "Lee Load All 2" which is practically none adjustable to my knowledge. I've found that Lee's calculations for how much powder it throws is a little higher with Hodgdon International so unfortunately I cant go like...
Anyone here reload shotgun? I understand this forum is really for metallic loading but I figured I would give here a shot before I create an account on a different forum that's more geared towards scattergun reloaders.
I've been reloading metallic for awhile and I have just taken up reloading...
Well.... I tried the load work up from 65.5-68.0 today... I got her to go 2740 at 68.0 but the accuracy was garbage (I'm talking 1.5-2.0in groups) and I was getting had a ejector marks and sticky bolt lift (plus another surprise in the pic).
At 65.5 and 66.0 the pressures seemed OK and I was...
I was wondering if anyone could possibly share their QL data for two different 270 loads. Thanks ~ Hunter

Jason, Haha ok thanks for the clarification. (y)
I might try RL26 in the future just because I do like experimenting with new powders. If I can squeeze 2800 out of RL17 I would be super happy with that(IDK if this will happen), but like you said something really does sound off, but...
First thing first.... Yes I ment 68.5-2930,2936 and 69.0-2780. That's what my chrono read. Several things may have played into the velocity dump, First, a overly heavy powder charge will drop the speed significantly(I dunno about 150 though). Second, my chrono angle may have changed since...
Nope 2936 is what I ment. I'm almost positive I can get down to 2800 safely. RL-26's burn rate is most likely too slow for this 338WM load. I'll come back next summer when its warmer and work up again though.
So I finally got around to testing the RL17 load. First, it was freezing cold (about 10) (but I kept the ammo warm) and I normally really have a hard time shooting groups when its so cold. Unfortunately I was only able to fire 3 shots before I pulled the plug.
68.5 gr. shot #1-2936 FPS...
Well... I guess we’ll find out how well they shoot out of a 24” Winchester barrel... I’ll hopefully post my results on Christmas Day maybe a lil sooner! If I get up to 2750 that’ll be pushing close/even to 300 RUM energy levels at the muzzle!!!
MtEmilyhunter,
Ohhh ok. I've had my eye on the 265LR since they were announced last fall, and when they actually hit the shelf I did see those at SPS. It would've cost $13 for shipping and I figured it wouldn't be worth it so I just got em from grafs for about $5 more with shipping (SPS $63.00)...
MtEmilyhunter,
May I ask where you purchased those bullets from. The reason is, I find those weights (1.4 gr.) and deformations absolutely unacceptable - especially for a "premium" bullet made to shoot long range. So "curiosity killed the cat" and I weighed 5 - 10 different bullets tonight and...
Hmm interesting... Over the last 2 weeks I've been reading and comparing the loads for RL26 and RL17 for shooting the 338WM 265s. What I decided especially after looking at the burn rate charts and reading on forums is that RL26 will look good on paper but is too slow for that cartridge...
