sensible to whom ?
6.5 x 55, 300 H /H, 375 H/H works for me and the older I got the fewer rifles I needed to "know" was a plus.
these are not hard recoiling calibers which was one of his arguments and I never ever thought omg I am using more powder in the 300 H/H, than I would in the 300 WSM...
that is great Guy !
love the bighorns, what is the current regs on hunting them, ??
I loved hunting sheep and goats, but those days are now a distance memory
pleeeeese, Mike is an engineer and an author. He has more money than Stephen King
Cheyenne, dont those critters sometimes graze or try to above the tree line ? He could find a 1000 yard shot I bet, or were you being sarcastic about shooting that far
I mentioned this before but was shot down...

I am confused which happens a lot at my age, but you said "if the wife or I" in reference to the draw, but did not mention whether or not your wife will be using one of the discussed rifles or perhaps she has a rifle we are not discussing.
I would let her use the 270 and buy a new 7mm...

Nice, very nice, congratulations on a job well done.
The 300 H & H is my absolute favorite mid caliber rifle. I have never had the hang up many have about the large action or the weight. Carried one for years, even uo and down some rather rugged terrain, absolutely love it. funny the rifle...
I have zero experience with one. And I admit it would be hard for me to own one. I dont doubt it is the new best thing, but for someone my age, it just doesn't look right.. the 6.5 creed craze is taking over, that is for sure, so it comes in "todays" caliber I would think your neighbor (...
yeah! that would work
We didn't have moose in Arizona and the first time I saw one was when we went to Alaska.
I still remember it and was amazed at how large they were. I also remember the first time I shot one and remember thinking --getting this guy hauled out is going to be a bit harder...
Gbflyer, salmon chaser
sad, sorry to hear this. As recent as 20 years ago it was not like what you fellows are experiencing today.
Also I dont remember how many here will remember Brooke and her family, they were members of the forum a few years back and they said that they flew to units 24...
Shade Tree, this was a topic of conversation recently with a group of young hunters. Granted I was talking about the 40's and 50's. I am sure Dr Mike and a couple others will remember, but we use to do most of our hunting right on the farm and sometimes from the barn or back porch. Rifles and...
gbflyer and polaris--thanks guys
scotty that is true
cheyenne --all of these guys are too far out there for me, I thought a ladder test was checking to make sure it was level and on firm ground before you got on it
I do often wonder how we downed any critters in the 1940's using an old rifle...
Hey guys, wanted to share with you what I shared with some young exchange students.
Those in the colonies do not need to travel all the way to Africa for some excellent "change of pace" hunting. If one wants to hunt different species than they have done or do every year, try Europe.
I...
hope you get that rifle George, good luck
We have friends in Namibia, so it will be there. I have been fortunate enough to hunt or be with those who hunted in a few countries and we also like Namibia --Good news, bad news on the big 5 there. You can hunt all 5, but they have fewer of them than...
Thanks everyone
George, Scotty, thanks for the p.m. and help
It has been decided, mainly at the advice of those who will take her out each day. to take both rifles on all hunts and "whatever" presents itself to her, under 100 yards she will use the 6.5., maybe even on more than one animal if...
Amen Dr Mike Amen !
Thanks Gil, good advise. I am going to make the trip, as I also want to visit with some old friends. However, I will not leave the main Lodge. She has asked if they can, at least on a couple of the hunts, not come back to the lodge at night. She really wants to set up...
yeah Mike, I am pushing her toward using it to take an Impala at a water hole and say she did it and then hunt everything else with her 7mm-08. On her list the Sable and Kudu could also be taken via water hole blind, but she is young and setting and waiting is not something most young folks are...
Mike and Dr Mike --thank you gentlemen
Mike, it is not scoped, never has been and would not be easy to do--obviously this limits her range and to be honest animals available that she can hunt with it. Her short list ( of her 5 ) looks like
Gemsbok, Impala, Kudu, Lechwe, Sable Antelope. It...
Dr Mike, thank you
In her infinite wisdom she wants to take it to Africa for her plains game hunt. Since she will not be hunting any of the big 5 or even dangerous 7, she wants to take that rifle that her grandfather used in Africa and her new 7mm-08 that got her.
The wood leigh for that...
5300 makes it even worse lol==I have to watch my typing
Mike, or anyone--there must be some reason they think the one solid unit is better. I am with you Mike I dont get it, but does anybody think they know why they think this is a good idea ?
