The thread recently about the 35 Whelen, which also brought about conversation about the Newton, promoted this question, as I did not want to hijack that thread.
I know that Fotis, Charles, John, Cheyenne's husband. my late husband and others love (d) the 340. It can push a 250 faster...
Excellent article Guy, thanks for posting it.
I remember Cheyenne saying the same thing. That it wasn't the bears that lived in her back yard, but that she lived in theirs
My hats off to members here--salmonchaser, Earle, Cheyenne, Bear, Hodgeman, GBflyer, Dr Mike, and Gil---who live in the...
I wanted to thank everyone who commented on this thread, thank you!
Since, folks like Hodgeman, Bear, and Dr Mike hunt the grizzly and have no problem with her rifle and bullet choice, I have decided to leave it alone, especially since she shoots the combo so well, out to 350 yards anyway...
I am assuming your referring to Bill and all I have to say to you two marines, is you can only hope to still be going as strong as he is at his age lol
And I know how he feels, I have face lifts older than some here on the forum lol
Scotty--THANK YOU !!
Gil, thank you, another good idea. Actually a 358, 200 gr, would be less recoil than the 300 H & H, (as would the 30-06, 180 grain for that matter ) but your right she would have matching rifles. The 358 would be enough for grizzly, moose and kudu and they are usually under 250 yards--inland...
The 300 H & H is an excellent idea, as she can handle that caliber but the stock on it does not fit her. You are making me think that maybe I can buy a Camilla stock and have it put on my 300 H & H, giving her my rifle, sort of, the stock she loves and a step up in caliber and it might cost...
Nice Caribou
Thank you for your thoughts, appreciate it. The only thing in the Camilla above the 308, is the 30-06 and it is only in the Mark V ( Fotis correct me if I am wrong about this ), but that would allow a 180 grain bullet, which might be a better choice fir the Kudu as well. And your...
Guy, you ask for "thoughts"
We had no problem and never even saw a fence when we hunted Red Stag on a 40000 plus acre ranch in Argentina. The stags were free roaming, wild, and huge. From memory we only paid 5000 each ( plus airfare ) and it included one day of dove hunting, red stag...
Thank you Fotis and Dr Mike--the letter ( and desire/determination ) did put a smile on my face.
Rodger, since the 7mm-08 is a 30 caliber, albeit a 308 which is even milder than a 30-06, are you thinking some of these animals ( excluding the grizzly ) need a heavier bullet ? Thank you for your...
I thought I would share a letter ( not an email ) I got from my granddaughter . I am condensing this as her letter was four pages long.
She wants to hunt the following animals with her Weatherby Camilla 7mm--08/150 gr Swift Scirocco combination.
Elk-U.S.
Ibex-Spain
Red Stag-New Zealand...
Not only have I gotten old and not able to keep up anymore but my favorite 6.5 ( swede) has also gotten old and is out of favor. Damn I hate old age! I am going to request that my 6.5 Swede gets buried with me so that it will know somebody still loves her lol
Bear, good luck today on your caribou hunt, sounds like a tough hunt but better than competing with 5k other guys for sure. What will you be hunting them with today ?
BTW--do you know how many guys on this forum wish they were going with you today ?--all of them !
good luck Bear
A little after midnight yesterday Bear was "thinking about" a trade and by 7:30 the same day, made the trade, attached a scope, ordered more ammo, and calculated how long the ammo will last
When he tells his wife he is going out to shoot dinner, she starts fixing the potatoes, she knows the...
My sentiments exactly. Best of luck Dr Mike
Shade tree---you may be Cheyenne's new best friend. Yukon, Moose, 348
Dan, seriously I have ben very blessed thanks to my husband. Even if I were healthy there would be nothing left on my Bucket list to hunt, but wish I was healthy enough to...
Don’t undersell the excitement of coastal bears! The numbers are more concentrated, MUCH higher bear densities. The bears are much larger with great chocolate coats. A boat based hunt is much easier on older legs and backs!
There are few things more exciting than working your way thru the...
Personally I think Alaska is your only "good" choice.
Just decide whether you want to hunt coastal or mountain Grizzly. If mountain, Guy had a good experience , if coastal ask one of guys who they recommend, even salmon chaser, as he spends a lot of time on the Alaska coast and knows people there.
Dan, that time of year the Rattlesnake Quiet area will have bulls--BUT--he will have to pack it out for a ways because you will not get close via ATV But tell him they will have some nice bulls there. I may have misunderstood your post but the area he is hunting is closer to Flagstaff, not...
Charles, it would be sacrilegious to not take that 340 to Alaska. BTW his granddaughter is back in Alaska. She enjoyed Africa but missed "home"
And I am sure Aleena ( and Jamila ) would smile if that 9.3 x 64 showed up in Africa. That may be the most expensive rifle you will ever own lol...
