My first rifle at about age 13-14 was a light synthetic stock .30-06. It was a decent rifle but way to much for a new shooter and I became gun-shy and developed a massive flinch!!! After college, I sold it and bought a Featherweight 243 and with it, gained confidence, shooting ability and quite...
I shoot a Winchester Model 70, 270 Win, 60 Grains of H4831SC, new Nosler Brass, CCI BR2, 130 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tips, and get sub MOA most of the time, sometimes a little over, but I am not the best target shot. They are seated to 3.34" COAL which is SAAMI I believe. I just got around to...
I was at shooters pro shop in Bend this summer and they had a bunch of factory seconds as well as factory seconds on brass for the 243 win. I scored big-time. I can check to see how many I have and if you need some to sample.
I took a mature 3x3 whitetail this year with a 90 grain Accubond out of a .243 at 260 yards. Muzzle velocity was 3,066 so impact velocity was right at 2,400. Retained 58.2 grains and expanded to .516. Perfect mushroom. He was bedded when I shot him and never got up, shot behind the front...
Excellent test. I can also vouch for the 90 grain AB. I took a nice big bodied 3x3 Whitetail this year at 260 yards with this bullet. Muzzle velocity was 3,066 so impact velocity was right at 2,400. Retained 58.2 grains and expanded to .516. Perfect mushroom. He was bedded when I shot him and...
Sounds like we think alike. I have a model 70 in .243 for deer and antelope. A couple of ARs for coyotes, a 270 for elk and moose if I ever get drawn, and a custom 7 x 57 Ackley Improved with a match grade Krieger barrel for target.
I know where there is an unfired Pre-64 in 7x57 for sale. PM me if you are interested. Asking price was $7,000, last I asked. My dream rifle. If only my wife chose to be a doctor instead of a teacher.
Thanks! It's a fun but exhausting time, which I'm sure you remember well. You have read my mind, that was my exact load I plan to work up when the time is right!
