Has anyone used this powder in the .223/556? with 77 grain bullets?
I read the new Norma reloading manual and it says that 2900 fps is possible from a 16 inch 1:7 twist AR-15!
I have used the 75 Hornady since it was first introduced. Shooting at long range w AR. Ive used it from 2700 - 2900 fps. CFE makes it possible to safely go 2900 though in my rifle it is more accurate at 2850 with either CFE or BLC-2.
I am trying to keep it supersonic at 1000 which it does...
polaris,
that is not a very hot load of BLC-2 and it is max for Varget.
Ive used BLC-2 for years with the 75 BTHP from 2700 to 2850 fps. The new Hornady manual lists SAMMI and NATO loads from 20 inch AR15.
CFE223 will get you 2900 if you are shooting at longer range.
Has anyone tried the 77 grain TMK yet at the Horse Ridge 1,000 yard gong range?
I'm trying some 75 grain Hornady BTHP's at 2850 and 2900 fps next week that might keep supersonic.
The 77 TMK from Black Hills is going 2750 fps and might make it too.
Has anyone chronographed this ammo from either a 16 or 20 inch barrel?
Box states 2820 fps.
I think that is similar to Ranger 556B which uses the same bullet, from a 16 inch.
Ranger makes about 2950 fps from a 20 inch.
If anyone knows if the SSA is loaded to SAMMI or NATO pressure I would...
Nice report, thanks!
Have you chronographed the Winchester RA556B?
A LE freind told me it was running about 2920-2940 fps from his 16 inch.
I am surprised your H4895 load does so well. I got great velocity and low pressure with IMR 4895 but it was only doing 3 inch groups.
You have such...
I was getting fitted for a rack grade Chapuis 470 nitro double rifle at Champlins in Enid, Oklahoma some years ago and they let me go through the gun room. Wouldnt you know it, a 375 flanged Rigby fitted me perfectly. Comb, heel, drop, everything just like the try gun. Only problem was it was...
DRT,
I am using CFE223 with remington 7 1/2 primer, WW brass, and 27.1 grains powder. this gives me average of 2912 fps in 16 inch. About 3020 fps from 20 inch. Both 1-9 twist. Changing primer to CCI 450 resulted in much higher pressure, and I got inconsistant velocity with Winchester small...
DRT,
Wow, thanks for the report. This is a great bullet, one of the best for a 556 available.
I figure it is a 300-350 yard expansion from a 20 inch.
You have an accurate load so you might try to chronograph at 200 yards. I did that with some 450 grain .458 North Forks and got much higher...
450 grain GS FN solid at 2450 fps. Deforms slightly. Good for everything but elephant.
485 grain Rhino at 2485 fps from 5 gallon nylon buckets of water 95% similar to George Hoffmans collection of 416 bullets recovered from cape buffalo.
Rhino bullets sectioned, 425 and 485 grain...
Rigby,
Are you going to use the GS FN or one of their monolithic HP's?
GS has never really received the credit it deserves for popularizing the FN solid.
Ridgerunners advice to run a tight patch through your barrel prior to shooting is a good one. I leave some Rem Oil in my bore for storage, and always get one flyer (first shot) unless I run a tight dry patch through the bore. Not scientific, but seems to work in my very accurate Remington 40X.
Guy, I found a handful of original Nosler screw machine 270 and 300 grainers in my gun room. You are welcome to them if you need a few more. cost of postage only. PM if you need a few more for your Africa hunt or load development.
W760 was very (and I mean very) sensative to changes in any component. Bullets, primers and brass in that order. Sometimes all at once! Appropriate burning rate but if you change anything, I had to start over w load development. W760 gave double base powders a bad name for me. I never tried...
I was not very impressed with the .458 Rhino in either 485 or 425 grain weight.

Check out how they performed compared to North Fork and original Trophy Bonded in my test of premium .458 caliber bullets in the Bullet Test section of this forum.
Whether at standard...
Guy,
My Ruger #1 in 375 had a really long throat and I cold get almost improved level velocity by seating bullets out to nearly 3.75 inches. Dont recall actual OCL but it was Looong!
In case you have to borrow a rifle, say you get your ammo to Africa but not your rifle, I would certainly...
Search for topics on the 64 grain nosler bonded solid base here on the reloading forum and also in the .224 section of the bullet test forum.
It will stabilize in 1-12 and 1-9 twist which the 70 grain Barnes will not.
Two good choices though.
Scott,
Thanks for pictures of 225 grain BBC at 2900 fps.
It looks alot like a 200 grain .338 at 3000 fps I cut out of a bison skull.
What folks who have not used them or used conventional (heavy) bullet weights of BBC may not realize is how effective the large expanded frontal area is at...
