I like the idea of the tipped tsx. but be sure your rifling is fast enough to stabilize them.
(The 62 grain tsx in 556 stabilizes in a 1-9 but the tipped needs 1-8).
Biggest difference in barnes bullets is not tipped vs tsx, it is banded vs not banded. I have always had massive fouling in my...
OK, here I am asking for help again.
308 winchester, ww brass, 20 inch barrel.
I just purchased some .308 175 grain Barnes Match Burner HPBT's for the 1,000 - 1,250 yard line.
They are long! About 1.325 inch average. (SMK's are 1/10th less).
Would someone run QL for me?
Varget, IMR 4895...
It is interesting how the AB's do not adhere lead to the outside edges of the expanded mushroom. Same kind of performance as the 125 grain I tested at similar impact velocity.
It must be a really high tin content and brittle as hell or else they dont even bond the forward portion of the...
SJB,
I have most experience with the .450 Dakota and in that rifle they did best seated long (even by 450 standards). They were not at all difficult to work with. Only powder that thy did not like was IMR 4350, and for some reason it fouled the barrel terribly. Yet 4350 worked great in my...
I did recalculate drop using both 1.625 and 1.75 which appears to be closer to accurate for a 30mm tube and high rings.
It made surprisingly little difference. About 1/2 MOA at 1,000 yards. But that is where you need to be most precise (5 inches difference in drop).
I could easily have...
Guy,
Interesting observation about the poly tipped partition. I can see the AB as a substitute for that.
The Bitterroots, original TBBC and North Forks also destroy heart and lungs but do so with expanded frontal area and large permanant cavity they create. I have always tried to hit...
Another range day.
1/2 x 1/2 inch center to center five shots, twice. Just one big hole. About 1 3/4 inch high from my 175 grain Black Hills ammo. Very convenient.
Over 3,200 fps now with latest powder throws. 2.81 OCL still works in AI magazines. Rifle seems to like Winchester once...
Thanks 257,
I went to JMB who I had used previously to make a range card and when I clicked on the library link for the Nosler and then selected the G7 rather than G1, the BC did not change from .5 to whatever it would be in G7 (something less than .3 I would think).
I have got pretty good...
I am fine tuning some range cards.
Does anyone have the G7 data for 168 and 175 grain CC bullets?
Also would like the 165 -168 grain BT or AB if it is published.
I am shooting a little bit flatter than I anticipated at Horse Ridge using the G1 even when I account for altitude and angle.
Thanks.
I pulled the bullet with an inertia hammer and tried the ctg again in my rifle and primer fired this time.
Powder charge 42.3 grains.
Shot some more of it and no problem.
I am surprised the PH allowed this hunter to shoot an eland w such a light, fast bullet.
Some credit must go to the PH for getting his client as close as he did where fragmentation can destroy the heart or lungs.
Myles McCallum was my PH is 2005 and he liked American hunters. He said they...
Thanks Guys,
Guess I am spoiled.
Ive seen antelope, deer and elk shot with 140 grain Bitterroot at 3400 fps on some pretty tough shots, close range and bone, and they retain 90 - 95%.
And they are the benchmark for expansion.
180 grain Bitterroot in custom 300 weatherby (0.3085 bore) makes...
Catskill and Guy,
Do I understand you correctly? The front of the AB is not bonded but rear is? So it fragments 35% like a PT, but it stops expansion/fragmentation with a bonded core instead of a partition?
PT lead and jacket fragments can be quite large and tear up alot of meat and organs...
Old Trader,
The soft lead big bores penetrated the spine but did not perforate the hide. Just penetrating the spine paralyzed the poor beast, but did not kill them. Which is why I much, much prefer a fast bonded medium bore which kills instantly and humanely.
You dont need a FMJ, just more...
SJB,
If you hunt bison with a lead bullet I would suggest that you cast it hard and go for penetration rather than expansion.
Neither a 54 maxiball (400 grain as I recall?) or 12 ga slug would perforate a young bulls neck. They both were recovered greatly expanded underneath hide which is...
On closer examination of the bullet I see why it lost 35% weight.
What appears to be lead adhered to mushroom is either a very thin coating of lead or just solder. The lump you see in the center of the bullet is lead. Everything else you see in the surface area of the bullet is not. I dont know...

Test results are in.
Muzzle velocity, 3,160 fps.
Velocity at target, about 2,985 fps.
Target:
two 5 gallon nylon Home depot buckets filled with water at 75 yards. (90% correlation to critters for frontal area and 95% for retained weight). 11 inches deep x 15 inches high. Center hit...
