What was the internal damage from the first shot, from what sounds like a great double-lunger and maybe heart as well. Interesting how the bull went down right there with a shot behind the near shoulder and broke the off-shoulder, to need a finisher in the neck.
I run a brush of Hoppes #9 through to get the powder residue, followed by with a patch wet with #9 to pick up the residue from the brush. Then a tight fitting patch with JB Non-embedding bore paste short stroked through the bore a good number of strokes. Chase that with a wet patch of Hoppes #9...
Given you state up front what your bullet options are, I take that to mean other bullet options are not available for the load development for this hunt.
Go with the 142 AB LR and lay that long, aerodynamic bullet out there into the wind with confidence! A cow elk can and does run 400-500...
The 225 Sierra is as short or shorter than the 200 TTSX or AB, RL 17 is gonna be a great powder for that bullet. I will be chronographing some RL17/225 BT loads tomorrow (35 Whelen AI) along with a number of loads with the 200 TTSX and XBR8208, TAC, RL17.
Thanks for all this great help and discussion since i have joined the forum. I posted this in an existing thread, but am adding to it and giving it a new thread so as not to hi-jack the other thread.
Question: RE IMR4320 and QL vs. developed load for 30-06 and 130 gr TTSX. Developed load in...
Question RE IMR4320 and QL vs. developed load. Developed load in this case equates to no traditional pressure signs of increased bolt lift or primer pocket looseness, after multiple firings.
My developed and chronographed load with IMR4320 gives a good bit more velocity than the same powder...
Hi DrMike,
Can you do a QL for the 130 TTSX w/IMR4320 in my 30-06 Ruger M77 MKII?
130 TTSX
70.4 H2O fired case capacity
3.290 OAL
22" bbl
Going to the range Friday and want to double check loads I have worked up.
Thanks in advance!
200 gr X went in on a strong frontal quartering angle and found under opposite hide in the rump.
250 gr X went in behind ribs and recovered in off-side neck meat.
200 TTSX for length comparison.
Frontal view from above of expanded 200 and 250 gr X bullets. Expanded diameter is .75" on the...
I would like to see a QL with the info I posted above. That would generate a list of many suitable powders, some may be better than IMR4320. Also will help confirm, despite no pressure signs, my load is safe.
Hey TD, is it a fo-pa to share info from my 35 Whelen AI into this thread?
Thought I'd share the max OAL (touching lands when chambered) for comparison to what you have.
-200 gr TTSX 3.475"
-225 Nosler BT 3.565"
-250 Speer 3.450"
-250 Hornady SP 3.435"
Magazine will feed consistently with...
I love the 130 TTSX or TSX as my antelope bullet in the '06. Heck, I am going to use it for my son this fall for his first year of elk hunting as well. I have the utmost faith in the Barnes bullets to deliver when using them in lighter weights. BC's are virtually identical, and point of impact...
Copy that. I will put some rounds in the magazine while shooting at the bench, see if there's any issue with the bullets moving or not. I don't suspect so, but with compressed charges I guess I'm just curious.
... I hate burning up a box of (19) 200 TTSX rounds each year after only needing one for the critter the previous fall!
I do keep the round count down on the 35 AI, though. Usually disassemble the rounds with a kinetic bullet puller in order to use the bullets for new loadings, then...
Neck tension has been enough for all my needs thus far, wondering if the compression would call for (or just make it a good preventative idea) doing an FC to avoid bullet creep. I have a Lee FC die for my 300 Win Mag, used it for years with no better or worse results than neck tension alone...
TD, looks like you are seating them out about the same OAL as I am, thanks for the QL you shared for RL15 in the email.
I am doing 66.5 grains and 67.5 grains of RL17/225BT as a start, so we are right on the same track.
I have never put a factory crimp or otherwise on the Whelen AI loads...
Yes, it will be a thumper x 2 if the data holds up! Early on I used H4350 under the 225 grain ballistic tips and got right at 2700 fps (with room to go up) however I had an aversion to heavily compressed charges, and was getting better velocities with powders like IMR4064. IMR4320, Varget. I...
You guys, particularly DrMike with the QL numbers have been very gracious and welcoming to me. Looks like I will have a window to get to the range this week, is it appropriate to ask for a couple additional QL scenarios?
The background on this request is I made a goal to harvest an elk with...
Thanks DrMike for the thought. I would add they are more or less ballistic twins with any bullet weight when comparing load data and powders/charge weight from manuals over time. I suspect QL wouldn't prove much different.
Here's a thought... The 350 Rem Mag and standard Whelen are within a grain of H2O capacity of eachother +/-. Let's run the QL for both cartridges with TAC using a 72 grain H2O case capacity and the same 200 TTSX bullet, SAMMI OAL being used for both.
The cases definitely are different. My...
I am excited as well, been pretty much doing the same thing for 23 years of reloading with customary powders and methods. Always felt I was on the leading edge of learning new stuff, so this a great leap!
Ok, for the 200 TTSX I loaded these rounds:
64/TAC
60.5/XBR8208
68/RL17
Seated to...
