40-50 yards I'd guess? Stalked him on foot for quite a while to get that close, however he's a Yellowstone bull, so kinda used to people being around.

Getting fired up yet for elk season? :)
Sigh, I'm probably only hunting cows, and late season, but I sure do like to see and hear the September bulls.

After handloading for that 357 Sig, I was all hot to buy one for a bit, despite ammo and brass being in pretty short supply.
Then I loaded some more 124 grainers to 1200 fps from my 9mm Kimber. Ah... I think I'm fine sticking with the 9mm, though the hot-rodder in me really likes the 357 Sig...
I did some handloading for the 357 Sig earlier this year. Impressive cartridge! I saw 1400+ fps from a 3.9" barrel Sig P229 pistol with my 124 grain handloads. Hodgdon's Longshot powder at 9 grains did the job. Max was listed at 9.3, so there's a bit more on tap if you want it.

Does your buddy have any more nilgai he wants to get rid of? ;)
Good luck on your hunt! The accubond should do well and yes, H 1000 is a fine powder for that.
I wonder if you will recover the expanded bullet from just under the off-side hide? The Accubonds seem to do that often.

Pronghorns are well beyond $150 these days. :( They're $270 now on Danner's website.
I'd urge the OP to come up with more cash for better boots. I have some $160 boots that are nice, light, waterproof and fine for moderate hiking. I can't recommend them for rough-country hunting. :(

Thanks. That was one of my favorite stalks. All on my own, creeping forward on a steep sidehill... Shot was only about 150 yards or so, but it was the first time I could get a clean shot at his body. I was in kind of a strange half-sitting position braced against the sidehill. Put the shot a bit...
You're right Gerry - I want to get that easy kicking, flat shooting, lethal 25-06 back into the hunt! Easiest way I have of making a 400 yard shot... Just put the crosshairs on the back of the deer and drop the bullet right into the vitals. :)
Salmonchaser - mind if I quote you - anonymously? Your post shows the ongoing problem with some of this firefighting out west... We've had similar issues here in Washington...

Was just thinking back about my hunts over the past 10 years. Many times I didn't come home with a notched tag, but empty handed. Those also were good hunts.

We fall into the same category on this. The 280 is just great! Much as I like my 7mm Rem Mags... The 280 AI is only a whisker behind them, while burning less powder and holding another cartridge in the magazine. Also no belt to mess with.
