There should be a good harvest of whitetails in the eastern US. There are certainly some fine specimen of Odocoileus virginianus shown in these photos.
Well, you would be making a good choice with any of those cartridges, Paul. So sorry you don't have opportunity for a moose hunt. The AO for such hunts is part of the joy.
I have a grand selection of bullets that I intended to use to work up a load for my 257 Roberts. However, I sold the rifle a month ago. Now, I need to sell the bullets and brass since I likely won't replace the rifle. It wasn't because the rifle was flawed (it was a Remington Special Edition...
Yup! You should relegate that ossified relic to serve as a tomato stake! The 300 H&H just won't kill bears, or moose, or elk; it's barely fit to serve as a blacktail cartridge!
This was in my morning read. A bow hunter in NJ tagged a 770 lb black bear. And the weight was determined after he had gutted the animal! Now, that was one fat bear!
One Fat Bear!
I don't mean to rag on Jim Shockey. He is certainly well-qualified to speak about hunting. I have admired his hunts for black bears on Vancouver Island and his deer hunts in Saskatchewan. I understand that he is likely promoting a cartridge that Hornady would love to see grow in popularity...
My goodness, how many times have I witnessed that. I take a shot at a moose, and the critter just saunters away. All I can do is mutter, "And there goes another dead moose walking away!" So often I've seen black bears and even grizzlies shot with my 270 WSM, or my 30-06, or my .356 Win, drop...
Does he know the difference between caliber and cartridge? There is no 300 PRC caliber, though there is a 300 PRC cartridge. One may say this makes no difference, but when speaking from a position of authority, precision does make a difference. Yeah, I'm sure Hornady no doubt ensured that Jim...
First kill can be such a meaningful event. It is even more meaningful when it is an ethical kill. You guided your son with wisdom and expertise, living what you are now teaching him. Congratulations to you, Dad, and to Andy.
There are some fine representatives of the whitetail population appearing in your photos. The fur bearers are clearly comfortable parading through the area for you.
That looks good. You would be golden with either the 55 or 56 grain load. I suspect that you could make up a test with 55.5 grains and be content. The difference in velocities is negligible.
