Its nice to see you guys here, Mike, Robert and Pat. Mike, I can't believe the ".280 Remington" name was available. With the following it has on here, I would have thought it would have been long gone.
Beautiful rifle, it should treat you well.
I stumbled across one of these on Gun Broker. I didn't realize that Winchester (FN) chambered the SG in 25-06.
I didn't realize the 3-9x40 was back up to $500. I guess they figured two years at the sale price was enough. I've got two of them and they are very nice scopes. At $500 for the Conquest though, I would be looking at the options that TD and BK suggested. I can vouch for the Minox scopes. I don't...
I'm not sure I qualify as an expert, but I do swap more scopes around than the average guy. I see no reason to take the bottoms of the rings or bases off unless you have doubts as to whether they were installed properly in the first place. If your scope held zero before, I wouldn't worry about...
In all honesty, my dad pretty much took care of every thing I plan to hunt when he gave me a Model 70 .30-06 for my 13th birthday. I've no huge desire to hunt the big bears or other dangerous game. It's not that I wouldn't like to do it, it's just that I don't see it as being a priority in the...
While not an excuse, I just finished reading a couple of Boddington's books... perhaps we'll call it a stay of execution. I'm not sure if the Whelen will be next or not. It is either going to be the Whelen, .338-06, or the baby of the commercialized .30-06 family.
I'm using 60.5 grains. 61.0 grains had me around 3250 with a little less accuracy. Those were summer/ early autumn velocities. I ran the loads across the chrono today. The 20's has the velocity down around 3150. From what I understand, that's to be expected with RL 22.
As always, develop loads...
Here are the groups at COALs of 3.305" and 3.320".
As you can see, the 3.320" loads went two in one out just like the original 3.340" loads, just a little bit tighter. I didn't bother shooting the 3.355" loads. It appears as though the Accubonds do like quite a bit of jump in this rifle...
I confess that I looked that number up to be certain, but my initial guess was accurate. It helps that Nosler only makes one monometal bullet for the .270 because I really would have been guessing on weight.
Scotty and Dr. Mike, I usually load up five of each when doing this. I'll shoot three rounds and, if it is doing well or I flub a shot or two, I'll shoot the others. If after three rounds it's showing no promise, I'll save the rounds and reseat them to the load I have found to work.
In this...
I appreciate the vote of confidence for the BT, but I'm just not sure I could have complete confidence in it. I know they'll work in the vast majority of situations, I'll just feel better with the ABs.
I loaded up some loads at varying seating depths. 3.305", 3.320", and 3.355" (the original...
Here's my load in action (watch the top target, the screen is blank for the first ten seconds of the video):

Close up of the group:
Both targets are with the Accubonds. The Ballistic Tips were shooting some pretty good groups, getting very close to being an honest 3/4 MOA load. The rifle is an M70 Super Grade (FN). You are very correct that those groups are good enough, but I'm aware of what the rifle is capable of, so I'll...
I got to the range yesterday with this load. The good news is that it shoots to the same POI as the Ballistic Tips. The bad news is it doesn't do it with quite the same level of accuracy.
I'm going to mess with the seating depth first and then maybe the charge a little if necessary and...
I developed a load for my M70 using 130 NBTs and RL22. The load is very accurate, but the RL22 is pushing them just over 3200 fps which worried me a bit because very close shots are always a good possibility. Although I typically load heavy for caliber bullets, I've decided to stick with 130's...
