54987 for the .270

Scotty and Dr. Mike, I usually load up five of each when doing this. I'll shoot three rounds and, if it is doing well or I flub a shot or two, I'll shoot the others. If after three rounds it's showing no promise, I'll save the rounds and reseat them to the load I have found to work.

In this case, I didn't have that many pieces of brass left. I like to shoot the whole batch before starting on them again so that I can keep track of how many times they've been fired. Maybe I should try two seating depths this trip and then have the whole batch of brass at my disposal for the next go round. Which two seating depths would you start with?

FOTIS, you mean they let you be a moderator without memorizing the product catalog? Just kidding, I must have been feeling difficult when I named the thread.

I confess that I prefer 59298, though.

I confess that I looked that number up to be certain, but my initial guess was accurate. It helps that Nosler only makes one monometal bullet for the .270 because I really would have been guessing on weight.

I would go with what you have right now. See if anything works. If you flub one and call it, you can always reload and retest.

You'll have a sense of what is happening with what you have. It will allow you to be presumptive, though not necessarily definitive.

Here are the groups at COALs of 3.305" and 3.320".

As you can see, the 3.320" loads went two in one out just like the original 3.340" loads, just a little bit tighter. I didn't bother shooting the 3.355" loads. It appears as though the Accubonds do like quite a bit of jump in this rifle.

Now I'll load a bunch up to confirm that it wasn't a fluke.

May I asked what load are u using in R-22 to get that kind of velocity as I shoot IMR4350 54grs and the best I can get is just under 3100fps.
I am shooting a CDL with a 24" barrel.

Blessings,
Dan

I'm using 60.5 grains. 61.0 grains had me around 3250 with a little less accuracy. Those were summer/ early autumn velocities. I ran the loads across the chrono today. The 20's has the velocity down around 3150. From what I understand, that's to be expected with RL 22.

As always, develop loads carefully for your rifle.

Trevor, great shooting buddy! Looks like you found the spot!

PS. I got the book back. Thank you.

No worries. Now you have no excuse to not get your 35 Whelen... Elmer will shine down from above!

While not an excuse, I just finished reading a couple of Boddington's books... perhaps we'll call it a stay of execution. I'm not sure if the Whelen will be next or not. It is either going to be the Whelen, .338-06, or the baby of the commercialized .30-06 family.

Nothing wrong with any of those cartridges you named. The big issue will be what you plan to hunt, I should think.

In all honesty, my dad pretty much took care of every thing I plan to hunt when he gave me a Model 70 .30-06 for my 13th birthday. I've no huge desire to hunt the big bears or other dangerous game. It's not that I wouldn't like to do it, it's just that I don't see it as being a priority in the future. I think a .338-06 would fill the biggest gap in my collection, but it will be some time before I will have the opportunity to chase the country's larger ungulates. The .25-06 will likely be next for this reason. It is both more useful in terms of the hunting I do now and easier to come by.

All of this could easily change should I come across the right deal on any of the -06 family members I'm missing. A good price on a No. 1 in 35 Whelen or a Mark V .338-06... or even a nice 8mm-06. Only the 6.5-06 is really safe from being my next purchase. I'm pretty well decided that it will be the last I add to my collection as I'm fairly determined to make it a full custom rifle and I won't have the money for that for some time.

Sounds like great planning on your part Trevor. The Whelen or 338-06 are a good pair of cartridges. Not alot of want when hunting with either of those two.

I shot one target with the AccuBond and one target with the Ballistic Tip today. The fine tuned loads have respective POIs that vary by about an inch at 100 yds. The Ballistic Tip also generates a bit more velocity with the same powder charge.

Here are the targets:

Yeah, I would say so! That is awesome Trevor. What a screamer of a load. Those loads right there would make Mr. OConnor smile pretty heavily I think..

I am working on the big brother today (35 Whelen), finally getting some time to load a few of the 225 AB's. Hope my stuff comes out half as well as yours looks!
