I don't really understand what you are trying to accomplish here, but if it is really that important to you to use something identical to the 25 cal PEP, why don't you buy a box of 25-06 ammo and pull the bullets?
You can then load them up and compare the test results to other similar bullets...
I've already posted this info in the main reloading forum but here they are in the appropriate bullet test forum, as promised:
.300 Win Mag
180 Partition
~3010 FPS
The jacket and partitioned core of the bullet were recovered in the sixth jug. The bullet punctured the skin of the 7th jug and...
I've already posted this info in the main reloading forum but here they are in the appropriate bullet test forum, as promised:
35 Whelen
225 Accubond
2580 FPS
The bullet went completely through six jugs, punctured the skin of the seventh and ended up on the ground.
It retained 175.7 gr...
For the .270, I use 61.5 gr. RL-22, an FC case, CCI 200 and a 130 Accubond. This is right at 3200 fps. With a 130 Ballistic Tip I get the same velocity with a half grain less powder. These loads are near max according to some manuals and over max according to others, so work up carefully.
You...
Generally, some jump has been the key for me with Accubonds. That said, my .30-06 just won't shoot the 165s. I tried several powders, primers, and the gamut of seating depths to no avail. I went back to my load with a 165 Hornady Interlock and the accuracy was there. Some rifles just don't like...
Congrats, everyone. There have been some very nice animals taken by the members here.
I broke in my M70 .270 yesterday morning:
I still have a doe tag left, so the Whelen may get a chance.
Don and Scotty, the .270 really has to get the first chance this year. Having already used my buck tag, I will certainly be a designated walker for the drives. I'll likely carry the more compact Whelen for this, so it stands a good chance of getting to bark.
I really am anxious to see what it...
56.5 grains VARGET, Fed. 210, R-P case.
You are correct, Dr. Mike, I think these two combinations are ready to take on just about anything I could come up with to hunt.
Thank you, gentlemen.
Whitetails are the quarry. Only does for me. My dad doesn't archery hunt, so he has all of his tags.
I took 18 water jugs with me to test these two bullets. Only four jugs survived. I'd say those are impressive results.
First the Whelen:
Then the .300 (the...
I just finished loading some rounds for rifle season which opens Monday.
225 Accubonds for my Whelen and 180 Partions for my dad's .300 WM.
Pretty strong whitetail medicine, but they should get the job done.
The 35 is my #2 rifle this season. I'm going to try to get the job done with just...
I've shot a number of deer with 125 Ballistic Tips out of a .30-06. It produced great results through the rib cage, but on bone performance was pretty ugly. It always worked for me, but made quite a mess at times. I've since matured in my bullet selection.
The 125's will work, just know what...
While it may not have been made in the true image of the rifleman's rifle, I will never part with mine. My XTR 30-06 was my first rifle, but sentimentality is not the only reason it will stay with me. I've never shouldered another rifle that feels quite so right. Here she is (on top):
If, God...
Thanks, Dr. Mike. Here are the details. I wrote this yesterday:
I'd been holding off on going out this week. Work has been busy, but in addition to that, the high temps didn't give me much incentive to get out. At the beginning of the week, the forecast for next week was a cold front with a...
55 gr. Ballistic Tip, 25.5 gr Varget, Fed. Match primer, and an FC case. I can't remember the COAL off the top of my head, but this load is more accurate than I am out of my Savage 12 .223.
I was trying trying to answer a question as to whether or not B.C. and muzzle velocity were the only important factors in resisting wind deflection or if mass played some additional role in a bullets ability to do this. It kind of snowballed from there.
I guess the most important thing that can...
