Guys thanks! Those bucks were taken this past November. Quite a week. I started it off day 1 with the buck in the center. He weighed 252 on the hoof and 210 dressed. Largest there weighed 274 on the hoof, and 228 dressed.
Scotty I'd squeeze you in that duffel if I could! Northern Maine is a...
DrMike: I have never hunted the BC side but understand it is excellent as well. Maybe one of these seasons I will get over there. You just have to love the Peace River country.
A lot depends on what action a guy has. If I wanted more gas than a 375H&H,and had a Rem 700 or M70, I would go with the 375 Weatherby or 375 AI.
One can fire and hunt with standard 375 H&H ammo, and then load to full velocity for the improved case. 375 brass and ammo are fairly common.
The AI...
DrMike: I was north of Peace River and in unit 526...I think. I have also hunted in 527,which, IIRC is a bush unit, right across the river from the mill in Peace River. Sound familiar? And 526 as well.If I am sounding confused it's because I have hunted back and forth in these various units...
Don't have a 280AI but have loaded a lot of RL25 in the 7 Rem Mag,and also the 270 Winchester. This was the max load listed for the 130 Barnes XLC and the Barnes manual max load. From a 22" barrel of a M70 Classic FW,the chronograph said right at 3200 fps.
A bit of interpolation should tell us...
I killed my biggest bodied mule deer on the Peace River in Alberta a few years ago with a 7 Rem Mag loaded with a 140 AB,MV of 3200 fps. To establish "big" his peeled and hog dressed carcass weighed 230 pounds on the butchers scales.I have only seen a couple of others that size.
The bullet hit...
Be interested in knowing who "DM" is and what bullets he was making and selling. Late in the game, the only one who was making and marketing bonded bullets for a time was Joe Abrams, who was taught by Bill Steigers.
And of course Jack Carter of TBBC came later, and then Lee Reid of Swift...
It's true that slower powders will give a bit more velocity than H1000.
When a friend and I built our Mashburns 5-6 years ago we worked with RL25,7828,and Retumbo, in addition to H1000. All delivered fine accuracy (both Krieger barrels,24"). Either Retumbo or RL25 delivered 3250 with 160 gr...
Looks like RL33 is another powder that will work well in the Mashburn. Interesting that charges seem to be 8-10 gr heavier than H1000 with the 175,depending how hard you want to lean on things.
I bet 33 would be really good with those big long 195 Bergers and similar bullets.
I started loading...
I started using IMR4831 in the 270 Winchester shortly after its introduction in(IIRC) the early 70's. The rifle was a Ruger M77 as I recall. This was about the time that supplies of WW II H4831 were drying up,or had already and we assumed this new powder was similar, which it wasn't.
The DuPont...
I have shot large bucks with both. At 7mm mg velocities I like the deeper penetration of the. Partition. Accuracy and trajectory have been moot points to 400 yards between the two
Like any hobby that people ride hard,I think we develop a natural curiosity about rifles and cartridges and a desire to know how one combination stacks up against the others. We try to find a system that works for us and under the conditions that we hunt most.
My first was a Winchester 30/06...
Thanks Scotty. We may be slightly off topic but the bullet in your first photo is a 160 gr 7mm BBC fired from a 7 Rem Mag and started at a bit under 3100 fps. Animal was a 6x6 bull elk and distance was about 200 yards, down hill slightly and facing away. I aimed over the shoulders to the back of...
This is interesting.
We accept as dogma today that fragmenting bullets inflict a high degree of wounding trauma, and rightfully so.
But we are somewhat dismissive of the wounding capacity of a bullet that expands to a wide frontal area, driven at high velocity, and retains enough weight for...
