So I’ve posted this link before on our ol’ pal the .270 Win, but this seems like the perfect time to drum it up again! I’ve killed more than a few elk with it and I absolutely love it! I’m not sure there is a better combination of flat trajectory, light recoil, and bullet performance out there...
Bill, that’s an awesome story above! I sold an ol’ 721 in 270 Win to my nephew on the cheap to keep the rifle in the family. He’s taken a lot of elk and deer with it and always sends me a pic of his harvest.
The 300 H&H just oozes cool! I got turned onto it when I read an article in Sports...
So made it to the range today and managed to burn a few with RL26 and 180 E-Tips in the 26” bbl:
Gr-FPS
71-2915
72-2923
72.7-2962
73.2-2996
I was hoping to be a bit faster, but think I may just settle for around 3000 FPS and play with seating depth a bit. I’m at 0.100” right now. I imagine the...
Scotty,
She looks pretty dang good at 250! I love that 338 and your 7 Mashburn as well, but I’m crossing my fingers that the 270 finds its way to WY with you!
V/R,
Joe
So I was working on a load for my 300 H&H using Redding dies and realized that I was unable to jam the bullet deep enough to get my desired bullet jump of 0.100”. After speaking with the good folks at Redding, they quickly sent me a new seating plug free of charge that should get me where I...
Scotty!
Nice rifle man! There’s not a whole lot in this world that can’t be done with a 270 pushing a good bullet at max velocity. I know the 338, 300, and 7 usually get the nod for elk in your stable, but I’ve never felt undergunned or handicapped heading afield with one of my favorite 270s...
Scotty,
Thanks for the sanity check. I was thinking I could make it to 3160 FPS if necessary, but am just fine below that. It’s just nice to know I’ve got a little room should it not settle in when I shoot it for groups and start to tinker with seating depth.
V/R,
Joe
Thanks TD. RL26 is good in sooo many applications that it has me rethinking a lot of my older loads. Temp stability, velocity and load metering and density make it a top choice!
V/R,
Joe
Thanks Scotty. I’m looking forward to continuing with the load development. I wrote to Redding to see if they have a different seating die plug. The one it came with originally won’t let me get the bullet down far enough to jump the 0.1” the E-tips tend to like.
V/R,
Joe
Excited to get back out there after elk, only this year with my custom pre-64 M70 in 270. I’m working up the load for it now using the 140AB on top of RL26. This is a change in plans as I had originally intended to shoot the 150 ABLR, but the on game performance of the original AB with its 70%...
So just dipped my toe in the water today and got:
FPS. Gr
2664. @65
2727. @67
2879. @69
2935. @71
I’m going to keep adding coal, but wanted to start low and work up. On this current trend, I’m not sure I’ll see 3124 FPS at 72.7gr of RL26 with my application (26” bbl, CCI 250, 180 e-tip &...
Doc,
Thank you! I just wanted to make sure I was reading it right. If the old rule of thumb of one inch of barrel is worth 30 FPS, does it stand to reason that my pressure is under 61K at my velocity of 3126 with the 24” pipe?
V/R,
Joe
Howdy Fellas,
Just made it back from the range after shooting my 270win. I saw where someone did a QL projection for the 140AB and it showed 62 grains of RL26 as the max load with a pressure of 64K. It was supposed to be good for about 3120 FPS out of a 22” pipe. Today at the range, my ladder...
