I'm always preparing for longer shots and have taken most of mine at 120 or under with one buck at 15 yards. And I laugh to myself about how many 300 to 400 yard shots I passed up on considering that I practice for that. Deer get awfully shaky and small at 400 yards!
Surprisingly as I get...
In my opinion there is nothing wrong with high fences and nothing wrong with not liking them either. I'd hunt one in a heart beat "if" it met my standards especially considering that some places are so large here that generations of deer live and die never seeing a fence or a hunter. And...
You shot those jugs at 25 yards while the bullet was traveling faster than it's design perimeter. It held fine and expanded like a pancake. I believe you got between 2.4-3.0 X diameter with almost point blank range. In the field where you might be shooting 200-300 yards that bullet won't...
Scotty,
Wondering if you had a chance to put them into jugs yet? And I would not be surprised if you got darn close to the same size expansion as you did with the bitterroots.
Thanks folks,
I hear you on wearing that jeweled bolt but, if that rifle ever goes to Africa after buffalo like I hope it will some day it will most likely wear some wear elsewhere too. I'm fine with a rifle showing some use after years and years of service.
You guys are right about...
The rifle is almost done and there are two things that need to be addressed, checkering pattern or not and to jewel or polish the bolt.
It's a dark wood stock that has a lot of burl with plenty of dark areas, almost black. It looks subtle at first until you get close then all the character...
That VX6 1-6 x24 came in Saturday and it will be going on a 404 jeffery in a month or so. That rifle produces a hefty amount of recoil so we'll see how this scope fares.
So far I've not had a Leupold go bad........................... Hopefully I won't now. Hoping Scotty got a bad batch or...
Scotty,
I hope you are not seeing a trend with Leupold. A VX7 with over 300 from a 340 wby and it holds like Robert's hand on his wallet. I've had luck with one VX6 on a rifle with some recoil (9x64) and so far it's held up fine. Not all that many rounds through it...
I've never thought a 24 to 26" barrel was too much worry when hunting. Granted, if the task was to swim through thick brush all day then just about any rifle is going to snag. For me a 30-30 carbine with iron sights is perfect for the thick brush all day scenario and for a walk-about rifle...
I can see different POI's using a different lot of the same thing. It would probably be an accident if two different bullets from two different manufacturers actually hit the same place and I can't ever remember it happening to me. I've used a lot of factory ammo over the years and it always...
I hate to bump them from a stand because it trains them to notice that we hide in them. I'll leave early or wait until they clear out. Sometimes up to an hour wait. It's not so bad waiting because it gives me a chance to see what comes out.
Pat,
I stopped crawling into a bag 20 years ago. I use them by opening one up and a blanket for covers. Works no matter the conditions. Up till last year I had a travel trailer and slept in a real bed. Now it's back to bunks which is great. Slept very well last November in an old army...
I feel your pain........ :>)
I hunt a small acreage in S/E Oklahoma from October through mid January. This property is surrounded by 4 other properties. Almost an island because it is a flag-pole property. All of those properties are leased and the guys on those leases have no idea what...
