I have been using RL-22 out of the Rem. 700 / 26 inch 1:10 twist barrel with RL_22 and 180 Accubonds for deer sized game. I'll be hunting nilgai soon and those critters are pretty tough.
As of now I am running out of RL-22 and I like this powder due to high velocity, 3,160 fps, but its not temp stable and seeking to use Hodgdon's line of powders or other temp stable powders. Powders I have on hand is H4831, H4831SC and H1000. What are you guys running with those powders?

I'd think you'd do fine with H4831SC. Not sure you will get quite the speed Mark, but it will net over 3000 pretty easily.

Honestly, I haven't found RL22 to be as bad as the internet has condemned it. Lot to lot it does/can vary but as far as stability it isn't that bad.

I know this might not seem like much of a answer, but at most hunting distances I don't think it will matter much? That bullet is not just cruising in your gun either, it's fast, and very little bullet drop already. Either H4831 or H1000 will provide you with a little less velocity changes due to outside temps, but you'll lose a little speed.

I don't own a Winny but helped a buddy reload 180 BT's. It was a close call between IMR4831 and IMR4350, but I have a saying "When in doubt, go with the faster powder." (My experience; YMMV.) He shoots bug eyes with that 4350. Anyhow, a 4831 speed powder should work quite well. For that same Winny, my friend has used H1000 with a lot of success in 200's.

Mark

I have loaded 75.0 grs of RL22 with 180 gr BT, PT and AB bullets and gotten well under MOA in three different 300 Win Mag rifles.
If you must change powders, H1000 is a pretty good one.

JD, what kind of velocity are you getting with the 75 grains of RL22? I'm going to start working with my new .300 Win Mag this week and like what I'm hearing about RL22. I've also loaded IMR4831, H4831 and IMR4350. I'll be working with a 26 inch barrel.

I know you asked JD, but you’ll see anywhere from 2900-3000 with that load and a 180 grain bullet.

thanks guys. I'm going to give the powders I listed a whirl and see what I come up with. I'd like to break the 3000FPS mark which doesn't appear too hard but I definitely want the accuracy to go along with it.

Not the hijack the thread but,

Between RL 22, H1000 and H4831sc what is the best powder for the 300 wm and why??? :>)

This! Scotty nailed it.

Joe

That was pre chronograph days so I can't tell you but I always thought it was around 3000 fps.

You will get more speed with RL-22 but more temp sensitive, H4831SC and H1000 is more temp stable and a tad slower and more consistent IMO.

I used H1000 when I had factory barrel on my Winnie. 81 grains if I remembered will pushed the 180 grain Hornady BTSP at around 3000 fps. Very accurate but really hard on brass. 3 firings and the brass is toast. I found H1000 to be not temperature sensitive at all. That barrel is long gone and so is load when Kalipornistan imposed a lead ban. My rifle now wears a PacNor Polygon and shooting the 180 Barnes TTSX at over 3000 fps with 74 grains of IMR 7828. The load is pretty stable and accurate.

Out of my .300 Win Mag with 26 inch barrel, I am pushing 3,165 with 74.5 grains. Book max is at 75 grains.
