How to shoot a ladder
I’m going to give an example of how I shoot ladders for my 30-06 Ackley Improved. I had it rebarreled in November 2006 to the Ackley chamber. I’ve since shot at least ½ dozen ladders through it and have found several sub MOA loads. The most recent was with the 200 gr...
The 180 BT are extremly accurate.
818 yds from my 30-06 Ackley Imp doing 2997 fps.

And the 180 AB @ 225 yds. Easy in and easy out. Same rifle/load just an IOR 3-18 in first pic and Leupy Mk 4 4.5-14x50 w/ TMR in second pic.
Norm,
Take what you have and explore it further. Don't start from scratch with another powder. Take your 56 gr load and go up or down in .5 grain increments yet keep your OAL the same. Then, once you settle on a charge weight, experiment w/ OAL, seating up or down in .05" increments. Once...
Yep! 2nds shoot great! 180 BT's from my 30-06 Ackley @ 818 yds from a 26" ss Lilja barrel/Rem 700. Barrel's muzzle diameter is only .542". Vel is 2997 fps.
Runnout was between 4-6 thou.
Corey,
I load upto 71 gr of Rel 25 in my 30-06 Ackley Imp behind a 180 BT/AB and get upto 3100 fps from a 26" ss Lilja barrel. I've not loaded a 165/8 and have no intention to. My rig is built for long range shooting/hunting. I also load upto 68.9 gr of Rel 25 behind a 200 PT/AB and get...
Corey,
You can but before I would be willing to get into it, what bullet weight are you looking to shoot and how experience of a shooter are you? I say this because you pretty much need to be willing to shoot 180's and heavier and be willing to compress your propellant quite a bit.
Big Al
I love to practice with the 180 gr 30 cal Ballistic Tip and hunt with the 180 Accubond.
I would like to have a 200 gr 30 cal Ballistic Tip to practice with and hunt with the 200 gr Accubond.
Yeah! a 200 gr 30 cal BT would be my wish.
Corey,
An '06 Ackley conversion is quite easy. Your gunsmith needs to have a '06 Ackley reamer so he can simply run it into your existing chamber and then set the headspace back, .004" IIRC. The .004" set back is so when you chamber standard '06 cases their is a slight "crush" fit when...
Corey,
You can try 7828 in your 30-06. Don't worry about putting too much in as you won't be able to get too much in to damage anything. In fact you'll need to trickle in a charge very slowly through a long drop tube to get in enough to get decent velocities.....and.....you'll have to...
Their are typically two camps to fireforming; bullets and inert material. They both have advantages and disadvantages. It will be up to you to decide which is best for you.
With the bullet method, you get shooting practice as the brass is formed. Some people actually hunt with their...
In discoverying a load for my 30-06 Ackley using 180 BT's, I did the initial load development with the bullets .005" into the lands. Once I settled on a powder charge, I took about 50 "long" loaded rounds to the range along with my press and seating die. I started shooting 3-shot groups, all...
I've used the RCBS Uniflow since the 70's. It's much better once you insert the micrometer insert and learn how to return to previous settings.
Few years back, I purchased the Lynwood Harrell's Custom 90 meter (4 clicks per; changes your throw by about .15 grains per click). I really loved...
Nomosendero,
I've only used the Fed 210M so far. I'm sure, given the time, I'll try different primers but this thing is giving me what I've asked of it thus far.
Something of note, I'm not seeing any pressure signs on the primers. Sure, their flattening but the firing pin diameter and firing...
Guy,
I'm guessing you are referring to "Ackley Improved User". He mentored me through this process; Also M98. I've been conversing with M98 a lot lately. Has even called me a few times from Australia. I'm helping him obtain about $1800 worth of various Barnes bullets via my FFL.
With Rel...
The following is a set of reloading options and techniques which, take it or leave it, is outside the normal thinking when it comes to reloading. I was turned onto this idea by a gentleman on www.accuratereloading.com. At first, like many, I was skeptical and unbelieving. With an open mind...
