    Handloads and self defense

We've all heard the axiom "don't use reloads for defense, you'd be in a world of hurt legally if you had to use them." I'm wondering if there is any factual basis to this. I've looked, but been unable to find anything from legal or official perspectives, just the same axiom repeated over and...

    New 9mm

Those are nice little pop guns. In a subcompact, I prefer 9mm, it is far easier to control, and gives you more real firepower. You kind of have to look at a sub like a long range knife anyhow. They are not for shooting tight groups, they are for solving a bad problem after diplomacy has...

    Brass life question....

Remington brass has been hit and miss for me. Have had some lots last almost indefinitely, some others fail within 3 or 4 firings, all in the same rifle with the same loads. Ditto for Winchester. I have also gotten some of my best accuracy ever out of Remington brass. I now stick to PRVI...

    2018 Bobcat!

Curious what guns and loads you used, and what sort of pelt damage you got? The only one's I've ever shot were with .22 subsonic while they were attached to a #2 Bridger or Sleepy Creek.

    2018 Bobcat!

Beautiful markings on that bobcat! Some of the nicest contrast I've ever seen. As for what to do with it, USA Foxx in Duluth will do a felt backed trophy skin mount. They are a commercial garment furrier and do darn fine work with even better service. They also have a skinning, fleshing and...

New Speer Gold Dot 6.5 mm bullet

The 150 was a real deer hammer too. Used them from .300 Sav to full house 30-06 speeds and got similar performance across the board. Great accuracy too. I'm down to about 100 of them left that I cherish and use solely for hunting loads and a quick zero check. Another casualty of the...

    New Speer reloading data

Is this online data a new thing? Never noticed Speer online before, I thought they were proprietary. Also noted their 6.5x55 Swedish data is really conservative. Their modern action loads are well below most manuals loads tested in the M96 action.

New Speer Gold Dot 6.5 mm bullet

Interesting. I know super sleek bullets are all the rage, but I still wish they'd bring back the 7mm and .308 Mag Tip.

    Best Bird Hunts and locations

ND, they often get stalled by the weather so they bunch up quite a bit. If you can find them in a place where you can set up, they do get habitualized to certain fields, especially sunflower and rapeseed. Can seem a little stupid, but still a lot of pairs of eyes to spot you. Think there's...

    Best Bird Hunts and locations

HTduck, I hear you on the white devils. I usually take a trip up to ND with a few buddies about every other year for snows. Early thaws and work have kept me home the last 2 years. Sometimes we shoot ourselves out of shells, sometimes we run out of gas money first, just trying to find the...

    Best Bird Hunts and locations

My favorite of all is small water duck hunting in the Midwest. This ranges from prairie potholes to drainage ditches to streams, rivers, beaver ponds and temporarily flooded timber and fields (God willing with a wet fall and water up into Grandpa's oak trees). I define it as any duck hunt that...

cleaning the action / hard to reach places

I prefer starting fluid (ether) to brake parts cleaner. BPC can be a little tough on some metal finishes over time, and it is a big no-no for plastics and lens coatings. Ether is relatively safe for these, but will remove poly or varnish based stock finishes. It does a fantastic job on...

How to Blow Up Your Rifle ( not mine)

I have noted a cold-weather phenomenon in a much more sedate caliber. Was loading 46 gr BL-C2 in 30-06 under 168 bthps. Load was tested and used extensively in warmer weather. I placed well in an OTC match with it. When I fired it near the zero mark, I got a barely perceptible delayed...

    STARTING A FIRE

Well, the incentive for the girls in the class was they got to warm up in the same sauna with some strapping young bucks who were more into doing real men things in the outdoors than video games or clubbing. My wife doesn't read this forum, and that was before we met anyways, so I can say there...

Tried searching 1st for ABLR 308 win dope

You'll have to calculate it. I like the Hornady 4d free ballistics calculator. You'll need your BC, Velocity and a few other variables. Remember, calculated dope (or published, which is generally calculated) is horseshoes and hand grenades. It'll get you close, but live rounds at range are...

123 gr Custom Competition on deer?

I know this is an old post, but I just saw it so I'll share some experience. Running the 123CC in my 6.5 Swedish military M96, I had a couple of rotational disintigrations this summer at range. Clearly not one of the "stouter" match bullets. Have also fired them into soft targets... jugs of...

    2018 loading & shooting goals?

Don't have much for loading goals. My competition and hunting loads are pretty much nailed down with no reason to change. I feel my guns/loads are currently shooting to near the limits of my abilities, and for hunting loads, they do everything I could ask given limited ranges and game where I...

Quickload question 5.56 help settle an argument

Interesting, .2 grain variation in this scenario works out to aprox. .2" at 300 yards using Nosler published G1 and Hornady's ballistic calculator, zero set at 200. Perhaps enough to split a line or not, but not a very significant difference. Velocity spread is probably within that obtainable...

Quickload question 5.56 help settle an argument

So, looks like 23fps predicted. Now I will crunch some more numbers and see what happens.

Quickload question 5.56 help settle an argument

I'm looking for maximum potential deviation, not average, so see if .1 grain high or low with a 5.56 charge (vs a nearly doubled Palma charge) would potentially drop some X's or points at the 200 and 300 mark, in a game that is often decided by a single X or point.
