First elk hunt is officially a go

I will also endorse a pack of baby wipes. Not only are they worth their weight in gold on the backside... but after dressing an animal out, two or three of them go a long way in wiping any blood off your hands and arms. Another essential I never leave the truck without is a roll of...

    LION

While I have no want to hunt a lion, I believe a muzzleloader can produce the "power" to subdue one with one shot. My elk load of 115 gr Blackhorn 209 under a .458 350 gr Kodiak/orange MMP sabot produces speeds/ballistics/energy that are identical to the 45/70. If you can't take it with a...

Guided Hunt, Travel through Canada, thoughts

Very nice write up Guy. An Epic Adventure for sure! When I worked at Harley a few of my riding buddies rode from Seattle up to Alaska on their bikes. Then took the ferry back. They loved it.

First elk hunt is officially a go

Scotty makes a great point about gaiters. I also wear them constantly. Wet meadow grass in the mornings will get you soaked from the knees down if you don't have them on. They also do a great job when crossing streams. If you misstep and find yourself in water above your boot tops, but...

First elk hunt is officially a go

Congrats Tom! For starters, coming from a fellow Easterner who has taken a few elk and mulies all with the legendary .270, grab some Partitions. No I am not bashing the BT's. I have just personally seen what the Partitions have done out of a .270 to elk at 200 yards and 30 yards, mulies the...

    Supergrade stock project

Yes he good Dr. Mike beat me to a reply. I have done three stocks before, but those were all machined rough inlets. This is my first attempt at a blank to finished stock. Thanks for the kind words. I spent most of my childhood watching my gramps ( machinist) work on stuff in the basement...

    Supergrade stock project

Hey thanks Earle! The flooring is bamboo. I just laid that floor ( about 800 square foot) in 1/2 of the basement that I finished last summer/fall. It really looks nice and it is pretty durable. Marine tex is some great stuff for sure.

    Supergrade stock project

To set the backstory, back in 2002 I purchased a Classic Super grade .270 at Jays Sporting goods in Gaylord MI. Love that rifle. In the fall that rifle dropped a 32 inch wide mulie in his bed 6 or 7 miles above Edwards Colorado. Came back to Ohio and took the super grade apart and cleaned...

    Pin Gauges

This is great stuff Scotty. You sure you don't want to move to Missouri and you can be the metal/load developement/barrel guy and I run the walnut end? I bet in the end though we would just sit around and drink beer, eat alot of venison/elk steaks, and just talk guns. Probably not good for...

    Rifle Reliability Issues

Guy I do have snap caps for most of the rifles and handguns in the stable, and use those with the kiddos all the time to explain how a particular firearm works. I also do have dummy rounds made up and I just used them the other day actually. I just got done cutting/filing some pillars down...

    New Mexico Draw.

I struck out this year. I only put in for elk. Between me ( non res) and my partner ( res) we put in for a crap load of tags. He puts in for everything available for both him and his wife and my three elk choices. Between us he drew one tag. Coues deer with rifle. On to Colorado I guess...

    M70 7mm Mashburn Super Mag

Dead sexiness right there. As I said before, the red pad just sets it off for me. Classic lines and classic looks. I would not want to be on the receiving end of that round.

    Shots you passed on

One comes to mind from recent years. 6 miles deep into the Pecos Wilderness and 15 minutes before legal shooting light on the second morning of the Oct 10-14th Bull Elk season in New Mexico. I am standing there in the middle of a meadow as a magnificent 6x6 is standing at 209 yards...

    Rifle Stock Question

I am a sucker for nicely figured women... er I mean walnut  Seriously I have one M70 in a Boyd's laminate, and one M70 in a Winny synthetic. All the rest are walnut. I think the same as David ( 6mm), as long as the stock is bedded/pillared and sealed correctly, the POA should not...

    Case Trimmer

Guys I have been using the Frankford Arsenal trimmer for a few years now. Everything comes with it to trim darn near any bottleneck I can think of. And gosh Darn It Cabelas has it on clearance right now for 135.00. http://www.cabelas.com/product/FRANKFOR ... 6CQ_st%3Db I was just telling...
