Thanks Troy .
No one has deer hunted on this place in about ten years.
We know that because we've been duck hunting there about that long.
After we lost our Mo lease last year we asked the landowner for permission to deer hunt.
We expected to have to lease it, he told us we could hunt for free...
Great job by your wife and bringing home the meat.
Also be glad she listens when she has a rifle in her hands, the way she shoots you could be in trouble.
My first thought exactly !
Good job Jake.
Tell the Mrs congrats !
Rifle season in Oklahoma was short but sweet.
The season opener was last Saturday the 21st.
The forecast of steady 20 mph winds with gusts to 30 had me less than enthusiastic about getting out of bed at 3 AM to drive up but as my ace compadre pointed out, " you can't shoot deer lying in bed and...
Rifle season opens for us on Saturday too, in Oklahoma.
Saturday doesn't look too good weather wise, a front coming and sustained 20-30 mph winds.
Sunday looks good though.
We've been bow hunting for the last 6 weeks (when the wind Gods would cooperate) and know that the rut should be going...
Congrats Scotty !
Been shooting Blackhorn 209 myself the past couple of years.
Bullets are cheap compared to loosing a wounded animal.
Having had the same experience with another makers bullets in a 308 is what lead me to Nosler in the first place.
Gotta be an ammo issue.
I'd bet the difference in the jump of the bullet to the lands is slightly different due to bullet shapes.
I've had more than one rifle that I had to seat ABs deeper in the case to get the accuracy I was looking for.
I shot 57 grs of IMR4350 and 165s for years.
Never super accurate in my rifle, about 1 moa at best but good enough to fills tags.
One day on a whim I worked up some loads with Rem brass 62 grs of RL22 and 165 BTs.
Rifle shot better than it had in the 40 years I've owned it
Wow !
Congrats to the son.
Glad he bought that tag just in case.
I would have never dreamed a 243 would poke through both shoulders of an elk.
I've got some sitting on my bench. Better get to working up a load with them I guess.
Oh and if I were you ?
I'd get son to go buy a lottery ticket...
Sight your bow in at 20, 30, 40 etc.
Shooting out of an elevated stand you have to draw and anchor just like you're shooting on level ground. Once anchored bend at the waist to lower sight pin where you want arrow to go .
DO NOT LOWER YOUR BOW ARM, you'll shoot over them every time.
Aim for the...
Been waiting since October 1st for the weather and my work schedule to synch up.
Can only hunt weekends and for some reason since the season opened in Ok on Oct 1 every weekend we've had N or NE winds.
That just won't work with where I set up my bow stand.
FINALLY got a break and yesterday AM...
Thanks Gents !
Talk about every nerve on edge.
That deer was within 20 yards of me for 20 minutes before I could get an ethical shot.
What a rush.
Can't wait to get back in the stand !
Prior to this I had taken one doe with a bow and that was 22 years ago.
Had quit bow hunting until I got bit by the bug again last year.
I passed a couple of bucks on my lease in Mo last year because they just weren't quite shooters.
Well last Friday Creedmore invited me to tag along to his...
I'd take both guns.
On days when the birds hold tight a 20 loaded with an oz of 5s or 6s is plenty of gun IF you put the shot charge where the bird is going to be.
It's also probably lighter and won't wear you out carrying it around.
Days when the birds won't hold or the wind is howling a 12...
