Guy,
The Buffalo Bore and Grizzly loads are pretty popular. A local concern manufactures loads featuring the Lehigh Defense bullets and seem to do pretty well. It's hard to argue with a 400gr chunk of lead moving. out of the barrel at 2000fps!
The 45-70 is very popular here for bear protection, generally loaded with significantly more powerful ammunition that the old cartridge as issued back in the day.
A buddy of mine hit a large black bear with one of the stout loaded 45-70s and the bear launched into a dead run and made it 20'...
I'd load 180ABs in both. I had great results with Hybrid 100V in my 300WSM and my friend's 300WM.
I've had a load string of successes with the 300/180 combo on caribou, bears, and moose...enough that I don't have any incentive to experiment. Mule deer and elk shouldn't be any different.
The 6.5CM is filling that role for me. Loaded down with 100gr bullets at 3200, it's a fur friendly killer of game like coyotes and other varmints. Load up 140-150gr bullets and deer and caribou can't shake it off. Throw in some generic target loads and ring steel as far as you care.
While I...
Yeah- Superformance is an excellent powder that is pretty picky on the cartridges it works for.
As mentioned, when it works...it really works. I got speeds from my .300WSM with 165gr bullets that bordered on scary with no adverse pressure signs. Too bad the rifle didn't like it and accuracy was...
This is kind of a cyclical issue that keeps going around. Ammunition shortages have created new interest in reloading...which in turn creates component shortages.
While I love reloading, this latest crop of shooters is approaching it from the digital mindset. I literally got a note on Facebook...
I'm generally a pretty understanding guy and willing to extend grace to others that I'd appreciate extended to me. Both times I returned a rifle for work it was turned around in a matter of days.
But this level of CS is simply unacceptable, particularly without explanation, for a premium...
I'd think you're fine. I'm pretty conservative, but occasionally you get a load or a barrel that is just fast.
I loaded some 30-06 for a buddy's Tikka with 178 ELDX and Superformance. At book max, speeds were 2850 with no pressure signs at all. The same load in a different rifle was 2750.
Perfect. I'll use my current OAL for the 180AB and drop the charge weight and see how it works. This rifle hates the TSX (at least it did 15 years ago) so I'm hoping it will get along with the E-tip.
I've ordered up 100 of the .30 cal 180gr E-Tip bullets to try in my .300WSM.
It'll be my first real foray into load development with monumental bullets, any tips regarding seating depth, etc. compared to loading BT or AB bullets? I know the ABs like a long jump for best accuracy.
Components...
In all fairness to Buffalo Bore, they do say they developed their standard pressure .38 loads using non-canister powders. Not sure how they measure the pressure but past experience with BB would make me very leery of sticking it in something old and fragile regardless of what it says on the box...
It think it's odd that Remington has had great success adopting wildcats and shepherding them through SAAMI standardization- .22-250, 35 Whelen, 25-06...for that matter- the 7-08 probably fits in that category as well. But decidedly more sporadic when it comes to its own cartridge development-...
Does anyone have a replica load for the now-defunct "FBI Load" that was pretty much standard in the 70s and 80s? I've got a friend looking to resupply his dwindling stock of this load that shoots point of aim in his fixed sight revolvers.
Experiments with modern defensive loads just don't...
For some reason, the platform won't allow me to attach a file photo. But I dearly love caribou hunting- from early season hunts up in the mountains to late season hunts with huge herds. The last few years we've concentrated on moose pretty heavily, but I love caribou hunting more than any other...
