Figured this was the best place to post this. I’m delving into refinishing the wood stock on my Remington 700 BDL It’s a 1980 vintage 270 that I got from my uncle and it’s getting that orange red hue to it. I’m going the rubbed linseed route. I’ve watched a ton of videos about it and it...
The more I look at it the more I like it. I especially like the attention paid to the lever. One thing I disliked about my OLD guide gun was the smalll, sharp edged lever loop. Marlin has now fixed that but that 450 sure bit my knuckles. This rifle would make a dandy deer gun for areas with...
Nice. I fondled a Ruger 77/44 today which was a pretty nice package too. That looks like a really nice package. One question. How do you like the tube feed. I’ve never shot a Henry centerfire lever with a tube feed magazine. I’ve shot a bunch of 22lr’s with varying results. I’m assuming...
Fortunately for my dear wife I have limited my stable. What I have are mostly bolts. Ones I’ve inherited so far are my dad’s Browning Abolt 280 Remington and my Uncle’s 1980 vintage M700 BDL 270 Winchester. Both shoot lights out. I have witnessed my Uncle dump deer corner to corner on a 40...
Thinking of getting Quick Load and was wondering what you guys think of it that have it. I have bummed data from friends (M1Garand) for some time and figured it’s high time to stop being a mooch. It seems like you get more honest data that isn’t watered down so much. I happen to love...
Wish you the best of luck with your load. I’ve always thought the 9.3’s were cool but, I never bought one. I’m primarily a deer and black bear hunter and I can hardly justify my 35 Whelen build. Not that simple justification has ever stopped me. A 250 at 2600 would thump pretty darn good...
Yes +100. I love Speer Hot Cor bullets but their consistency as far as availability flat out sucks. A Nosler cup and core that’s akin to the Hot Cor in price and performance in a 100 count box would be great! Good call on this one.
Hmmmmm
.358 partition RN 250 and 275 grain. Only Woodleigh makes a good medium to heavy RN anymore. And, a 35 Nosler to push them. Maybe even limited runs of RN partitions in heavier for caliber weights for all calibers. Everyone has pretty much abandoned the RN but I bet they’d sell.
.257...
I was thinking burs and copper fouling might be to blame as well. You might want to scrub the bore real well and possibly have a smith scope the bore. Maybe a light lapping would do it some good.
Buddy of mine gets 2900+ FPS with 160 Trophy Bonded tip bullets in his 22” 700 Mountain Rifle with RL26 and QL data. Might want to check 26 out. I hear it’s like magical fairy dust for the 280. I run 26 in my 280 and ran it a 280AI with good accuracy and speed. I plan on getting a 8# keg of it...
I agree with the general consensus. I don’t video or take pictures of animals that I kill unless they are appropriate because I know where they can end up. Problem with showing everything including failed hunts is perspective. You never know who is viewing it once it’s out there and what...
I had good luck with 143 ELDX handloads even at scorching distance. About 15-20 yards. Don’t over look the factory Whitetail Hunter loads or the 129 interlock. They’ll do just fine on deer small or large.
Bump for a good topic. I’d like to see how 4166 works in the 35 Whelen. When mine gets done I just may pick up a pound and give it a try. Also would like to try 4955 in my 280. I have plenty of good old IMR 4831 for it but some new load work would give me something to do.
Just seeing pics of #1 and#2 is cool. Thanks for posting. I would like to have an old model 70 ‘06 with a peep just for hunting no matter what the serial number.
I was the same way. It’s a lot easier to use your less dominant eye than try to shoot left handed proficiently if you’re right handed. Let her shoot how she’s comfortable. My dominant eye changed as I got older but I’m still right handed. I’ve practiced shooting left handed but still right...
Hope that you figure out your rig’s behavior issues. A note on the 145 grain hot cor and BTSP. I have used them for some time and it was my dad’s favorite bullet for deer in his 280 Remington. I used it in a 7-08 and loaded with W760 and a CCI 250 that gave me a string of eight DRT deer. It...
IMR4064 at 53 grains was a mainstay with my 06’s and 150’s. Also a lot of IMR 4350. Now I run a 280 Remington and IMR4831 and RL26 fills the shelf along with RL15 for my soon to be 35 Whelen. The 30-‘06 is one of those cartridges that will shoot well with almost any powder though. There were...
Not surprised about this. As a 20+ year LEO I’ve been made aware of a lot of weird or unexpected behaviors of bullets through unfortunate events and investigations. Buck shot will behave similarly and can be used advantageously. Buckshot when fired at a hard surface such as concrete has been...
I see this is a bit old but, is tungsten safe in vintage shotguns? Do any of you guys have personal experience shooting this stuff in old shotguns. My father passed last year and being the only son I inherited all his gear including a 1960 Belgian Browning Auto5 2 3/4” It has two barrels...
I have the same truck just a 2019. I can get 25 mpg if I behave. Mine has a ecotorque 5.7L and a ten speed transmission. Solid truck. My last was a 2003 and it ran like new when I got rid of it last spring. A bit rusty and ugly but it was still a runner. I figure I’ll be good for fifteen more...
