Nosler says that beginning with the 30 caliber 180-gr. Ballistic Tips (and larger), the jacket's profile is changed or upgraded to a much stronger contour similar to the AccuBond (shown below). The lead core is also hardened over the 165-gr. and below bullets.
Lighter weight bullets like...
Just out of curiosity:
Who has first-hand experience with harvesting elk or moose with Nosler's Ballistic Tip - and - how did the bullet perform?
Steve
P.S. My preference in 30-06 is 180-gr. High Energy Partitions at 2,890 fps or 180-gr. AccuBonds at 2,750 fps.
Thanks for the reminder.
While we also have a new Remington 700 SPS Stainless in 30-06, my son and I kind of like toying with the semi-auto.

Concerning my new Remington 7400 in 30-06:
Initially, the first 50 rounds produced jams every third round, so I went to work on it by...
Would it be fair to say that the front portion of a Nosler Partition is very similar in construction to the Solid Base design and that INITIAL expansion is about the same for both bullets?
Thanks in advance of your expertise!

Looking for advice of what to do or not do to a Remington 7400 semi-auto 30-06 before hunting in very cold weather.
Any advice is much appreciated.

Have any of you experts tried the SVL (Sims Vibration Laboratory) LimbSaver Barrel De-Resonator that is supposed to improve accuracy and tighten groups?

After doing a lot of research and shopping around, we decided to purchase a new Remington 700 SPS Stainless 30-06 as a gift for my son's earning the Eagle Scout Award.
Here's a link that turns over a new leaf in fine-tuning a MOA rifle.

You're exactly right!
Experts who frequent this good Forum would understand that one must compare the same weight / size of bullet between calibers to equal the playing field.

What do you folks think of the newer Winchester Model 70's?
I am considering a 30-06 rifle for my son. It's Super Shadow composite model with a 24" barrel and Controlled Round Push Feed (CRPF) Mauser style action, with sling, and Simmons 8 Point 3-9X40 Scope at Walmart for only $398. (Note...
If you're hunting elk or moose near the end of a rifle's limit, you can turn the same gun into a 30-06 Magnum by doing three simple things:
1. Using Premium Bullets with much higher BC's can easily turn a 30-06 into a 300 Win Mag with standard / less Ballistically Efficient ammo.
Example...
In looking at / reading about the Solid Base (SB) and Ballistic Tip (BT), I get the impression that the percentage of alloy is about the same at around 3% and the SB mainly differs due to the exposed lead tip.
BC's are somewhat close as well; .491 (SB) versus 507 (BT).
Summary of 30-06 versus 300 Win Mag using more efficient bullets:
At short ranges with standard bullets, the 300 Win Mag clearly has the edge, but at longer ranges around 250 - 300 yards, the 30-06 shooting higher BC bullets pass the Win Mag in performance.
At 300 yards, a Power Point has...
Example of how ballistic efficiency can upgrade the caliber you're shooting - using 30-06 and 300 Win Mag in comparison:
On page 13 of Winchester's 2005 Ammo Catalog, you'll find the following 300 Win Mag data:

Nosler's Solid Base (SB) 180-gr. 30-06 bullets in Federal's Vital Shok line-up are extremely accurate, while achieving 7/8" to 1 1/8" groups at 100 yards in my sporter hunting rifle. Cudo's to Nosler for bring back a ballistically efficient bullet that achieves a high BC of .491...
