No, in time I shot the barrel out and sold the action to another buddy who used it as the basis of his custom single shot 22-250 Ackley Improved. It is one sweet shooter with 24" stainless Schneider barell, McMillan stock and Leupold 6.5-20X scope. I think I bought it in like 1979 or so.
Sorry to hear about your knee. Hope it heals well and your rehab isn't too painful.
I am going to try some 100 gr Nosler Solid Bases with Accurate MagPro powder and Fed 215 primers. Both my Stevens and Sako .243's have 1 in 10" twists, so I have no plans to try anything heavier. I am hoping...
.38 special with my buddy after we graduated from college. Very exciting to graduate from our .22 rimfire revolvers (both el cheapos of dubious origin) to centerfire revolvers. His was nice, mine not so much. At least not back then.
Later, after acquiring a much better quality...
What kind of primers were you using? I have found that Winchesters seem a little smaller in diameter than Federals or CCI. The Winchesters seem to fit loosely after just a few firings, while the Federals still provided a snug fit even after 6 or 7 loadings.
I have two of the Phillipine 3-9X Fullfield II's on a .270WSM and a 6.5x55. Both have the Ballistic Plex reticle and both have been trouble free. There are scopes available with better glass but not for the price. (Well maybe the new Redfields, checked one out the other day at Wholesale...
My personal preference is for the .270WSM. I can easily tolerate its' recoil with 150 gr Nosler Partitions, I believe it kicks a little less than the full length 7mm Rem Mag. I also hate the belt on the Remington Magnum case. I also prefer short action rifles. I haven't had the opportunity...
Just curious, which scope crapped out on your .270WSM, and what did you replace it with. I have a Burris Fullfield II 3-9X Ballistic Plex on mine, and it has worked fine for over 6 years. Am considering something with a little more magnification. Really like the Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14X on...
Did you actually try them? My cannelured 6mm 100gr Solid Base bullets work great, and I wish I would have bought more while they were available. Even though the originals were prettier without the cannelure. But by all means, don't buy any more of those nosler seconds. Maybe then, they will...
If I was in your shoes, I would start with the IMR-4064 powder with 150 gr bullets and work up gradually to a max of around 52.0 gr, assuming you don't encounter pressure signs before then. If that doesn't produce an acceptably accurate fast load, then I would try the H-4895 and work up to a...
My bet is that a 105 gr 6mm Accubond wouldn't stabilize in a 1 in 10" twist. Probably the 95 gr would be the safer choice for universal accuracy from most factory twisted barrels. (Not to say that a 105 gr wouldn't be neat in a 1 in 9" or 1 in 8" twist)
Matts, I have had the best results with Vihtavuori N-165 in my .270WSM. But have also had good results from RL-19 and RL-22, IMR-4350 and Accurate Data 86 (basically cannister grade Accurate 3100). Stick with the slower powders and you should be able to find both the accuracy and velocity you...
Just heard about the fire/explosion at the plant. Relieved to hear that no one was seriously injured. Had the pleasure of touring the plant many years ago, (before Accubonds) and visiting with Bob and some of the staff. Quality products from quality people, am confident they will be back up...
Hornady's ® latest manual listed these loads for the .270WSM using VV N-165 and their bullets:
130 gr SST start 61.7 gr Max 67.9 gr velocity 3200
140 gr SST start 60.4 gr Max 66.6 gr velocity 3100
150 gr SST start 57.8 gr Max 64.8 gr velocity 3000
I used the Hornady data to work up to my 65.0...
I thought I was familiar with most wildcat cartridges, but I have never heard of a .270 Weaver. Could it be a normal .270 Winchester with a Weaver scope? That, I have heard of! If it is a wildcat, could someone enlighten me as to what it is?
I have heard rumors that the factory Winchester .270 Short Magnums were loaded with Accurate MagPro powder. (which makes no sense, other than it probably would give very high velocities at maximum pressures)
I have played with MagPro a bit, but found best results in my .270WSM with the 140 gr...
I use TAC almost exclusively in my .223's. I settled on 26.0 gr with 50 gr bullets for around 3200-3300 fps depending on bullet brand and temperatures. In my 26" barrel 700 SPS varmint, I chronographed the 50 gr Ballistic Tip using CCI-450 primers and winchester brass at 75° F, and got the...
Some people have said it is harder to find a "bad" powder for the .223 than a good one. Over the years, I have used Accurate Data 2200, 2230, 2460, 2015BR, SRB-118, Hodgdon H-4198, H-4895, H-335, H-414, IMR-4895, 4064, Reloder 15, and Win 748. I am currently using Ramshot TAC and plan to try...
I won't even bother trying any new Winchester powders. In my experience, every time they offer a good one, they discontinue it. Remember W-785? Or how about WMR? Or their latest short term offering, WXR? If they run true to form, about the time you work up some truly wonderful loads, you...
