Yeah , but that dry heat can kill you just as fast as wet heat. I've been a desert rat for most of my life and I have a great deal of respect for that "dry" heat.

Most of my elk hunts have been in Arizona or New Mexico I've used thr .300 Win. Mag. with the 200 gr. Speer Hot Core, a 30-06 with 165 gr. Accubond but most of my successful hunts have been with the .35 Whelen and 225 gr. TSX bullet. I've had successful shots from 75 yards to 530 yards. I think...
Your choice of 338-06 will work just fine on elk. Frankly there's nothing new under the sun. The 338-06 and the .318 Westley Richards are about as alike as two peas in a pod with 250 gr. bullets. I also is called the .318 Rimless Nitro Express.
Then there is the .350 Rigby Magnum which ran a...
While that would work, it wouldn't be legal thanks to GCA 1968 and GCA 1986. I'd have to pass. If you're in the neighborhood do stop by. I don't get many visitors so you'd be more than welcome.

I have the book AFRICAN RIFLES AND CARTRIDGES by John Taylor. One of the cartridges he damns with faint praise is the .318 Westley Richards. He condemns it because local hunters used it to shoot elephants. The interesting thing about the cartridge is the bore is .318" but the bullet is .327 in...
I left California for good in 1968. Only went back for bitrhdays and holidays to see family and even many of those were missed because of work. I ended up in Winnemuca Nevada working for ther NWS and didn't leave until 1979 when a job transfer moved me to Tucson. Arizona is not too bad but...
I have a couple of Winchester M70s in .338 Win. Mag. One is a post 64, pre68 push feed with 24" barrel that was a kind of a weird deal when I got it and the other a New Haven Classic Stainless controlled feed rifle with 26" barre and a muzzle brake making the barrel 28.5". Both rifles came with...
Try 70 years. I started in 1954. When I finally got a chronograph it was interested mainly in velocity. These days, while I still get the velocity figures, I use the chronograph more as a poor man's pressure checking device. As you increase the powder charge, velocity also increases, up to a...
Sometimes a die just won't cooperate. I have a 30-06 sizing die by RCBS that no matter what I used for a lube, the case would stick to the point that I had to use a stuck case remover. I tried everything from soap to STP. When Imperial sizing wax came out I tried it as well. No matter, the case...
"N.A.T.O.? Personally I’m in favor of withdrawing from that despot organization and kicking them off U.S. soil."
If you'd have said the United Nations I would be 100% in agreement with you. I used to run a bumper sticker before it weathered into distruction that said."GET THE UN OUT OF THE US...
I beg to differ. One manual shows 51.0 gr. of 4895 as being a max load with the 150 gr. 30 caliber bullet in the 30-06. Ay one time that manual said 51.0 gr. was the starting load. Both loads are genuine published load just a relatively few years apart. Same manual just different copyright...
I can't speak for plated bullets or how hot or not you can reload then but I shoot strictly my own cast bullet loads in several .44 magnums. Powder of choice is A2400 but I have used W296 which is exactly the same as H110, just a different lot. The W296 load I run is 24.0 gr. with either the 240...
When my son in law bought a Winchester FWT in .300 WSM, he was insistent that I load his brass with a specific powder and bullet to a charge level I considered potentially excessive. I had him leave the gun, dies and components with me and I'd do a work up to determine if what he wanted was...
I run Wilsons in a Colt Combat Commander. The only Mec Gars I have are for a SIG P220 .45 ACP. Two factory mags that came with the gun plus two spares I bought from a dealer.

I moved to Arizona back in 1979 and during the time I've lived here have drawn maybe six deer tags, two elk and zero antelope. I did a guided ranch hunt for antelope in 2009 and 2010 my first guided elk hunt on a ranch. I did do a few more elk hunts on that ranch, the last one in 2019. That...
Well, give me a shout when you hit town. Only thing that might get in the way id doctor appointments. My coffee might be a bit nasty but it's good.

My stepson was a stubborn cuss. He complained of a lower back pain in his early twenties but refused to see a doctor. He was into bodybuilding big time and thought the pains was a strained back or something. It never went away and he still refused to seek medical aid. His boss liked him and sent...
