Guy it’s been a few years for sure. When we met 27 years ago we found out we’d been attached to the same MEU, if I remember correctly. You’ve done your second career and working on your golden years of retirement. Me, I’m shinning a seat more than ever and the headaches have grown...
A little late to the post, but here goes. The 7x57 was my first big game rifle that my Grandad had given me. A Chilean 1895 Mauser. Loads I started with were mild with a Speer 160 grain. I had to file the rear sight down to get it to hit to point of aim. I took a few deer with it over...
I have 3 No 1’s. All of them wear a 1-4 Leupold. It just seems to look right. A 1.5-5 would be the same look and easily capable of 300 yard shots on game.
I always kept a New England single shot .30-30 in the camper when we were camping. I have a 20 gauge barrel for it that I’ll throw on too for in the truck. Keep a slug handy for a close up bear and shot shells for grouse. Washington doesn’t allow the gun to be loaded in a vehicle so the...
I like it Guy. Every year we throw in the MEUSOC course during one of our quals. It’s good to throw manipulation drills in with actual qualifying. It’s funny, you see some that are just OK paper shooters really shine on a dynamic course, and some phenomenal shooters on paper not do so well.
Well, I have two in 7x57 and an RSI model in 6.5x55. All three are good shooters, with one of the 7x57’s being spooky accurate with Speer 145 boat tail bullets. I say grab a 7x57:)

.30-06
I think all of these cartridges are extremely capable, as others have pointed out already. They are known to be so by true gun people but for some reason most people think of them as deer or youth cartridges. I threw in the old ‘06 because it seems...

I love my .35 Whelen, and if I ever get to hunt moose again it’s getting the nod. Have you chronographed the load yet to see what it’s actually doing? 2600+FPS would be absolutely smoking!
Pretty solid thinking on your part in choosing some of your calibers. I’ve used a .35 Whelen on a black bear that virtually anything would’ve killed. But what really sold me on it was the game I shot in Africa. A 250 grain Nosler Partition just hammered my Kudu and Blue Wildebeest. The...
Great photos Guy. I’ve been hitting a couple lakes quite a bit doing some fishing and the Bald Eagles are always present. Love watching them catch a fish.
Guy, I can’t stand the thought of putting a scope on a lever gun, but if I ever do it’ll be a straight tube Leupold. I’m always amazed how accurate the big lever action calibers can be. When I do my part my .450 Marlin can cloverleaf a group off the bench at 100 yards. It’d be interesting...
I’m a little late to the game on this one but I’ll throw this out there. I think the 150 is going to be a great bullet weight for your 7x57. I loaded 160 AB out of my Ruger No 1 with a 22 inch barrel to 2750 fps with IMR 4350 and zero sign of pressure. That’s right at .280 Rem velocities...
Speer makes a .458 300 grain they also call a Plinker. But loaded up in a .45-70 or .450 Marlin it is a great bullet that holds together extremely well and seems to perform as good or better than bullets that are marketed as a hunting bullet. If their 44 Plinker is built the same way I’d say...
