My son cleans the barrel in his 300WSM Rem 700 stainless late in the summer, then does a final range session just before the season opener. From that point on, the barrel is not cleaned till the season is over.
I didn't clean the barrel in my 7RM after the above 5 shots, and I don't have a...
I think the best argument for using BR primers is the confidence they create - a perception. Otherwise, I'd bet it would take a very accurate rifle, superb optics and a fine shot to tell the difference between quality brand-name standard & BR primers.
I use Rem BR primers in my Rem 700 VS 223...
Earlier this month I removed the SWFA 12x sniper scope from my Rem 700 SS 7RM and re-installed the Leupold 3-9x in preparation for the season opener later this month. The Leupold had been on the rifle earlier this year, and had been sighted in. The scope mounts are the Warne quick-detach style...
I've shot quite a few Nosler 150gr BTs and 165gr BTs in my 308 Ruger Scout.
The 165s always shoot into less than 1 inch. The 150s are 1.5"-2", and I've tried a few different powders and speeds.
Nosler 165gr BT, 44gr W748 and Federal 210 primers - that's what works for me.

NYDAN, thanks for clearing that up. Of course you're right, if it is advertised as having even bolt lug contact, then it should. That's part of why custom rifles cost more. I guess I wasn't aware of what a "M700 NA Custom" was. I hope you get it shooting the way you want/expect. BT
Due to its popularity and name recognition, a 7RM may have more resale-ability than any other 7Mag. As often as you trade/sell/acquire, it might be consideration. ;) The recoil of an '06 with a flatter trajectory... BT
I saw in your notes that the rifle was returned because of uneven contact of the bolt lugs. In my experience and from what I've read, I've learned that factory rifles rarely produce even bolt lug contact. This is one of the things that is done to a bolt action rifle during an "accurizing"...
In my opinion, magnums are relevant mostly because they could turn a poor hit into a game stopping hit. Flatter trajectory is #2 in relevancy. A perfectly placed 165gr NAB/BT from a 308 Winchester at 300 yards will quickly stop any elk. A poor hit when fired at 2800fps muzzle velocity won't have...
I have a T/C Arms brochure from the late 1970s that I acquired with the T/C stuff I owned at the time, including a Super 14 .30 Herrett.
The booklet included loads for all of the cartridges offered by T/C at the time, including the 30-30.
Speer 110grRN H4227 24.5gr Rem 9-1/2 = 2090fps with 10"...
That's a great first range report!
I use a Harris bi-pod at the range, to hunt with, and to hold the rifle during cleaning. At the range, I use a rabbit ear bag at the rear. For a light kicker and while shooting off a bench, I try to not touch the rifle any more than I have to. Once the...
I say let them figure it out for themselves. Develop the energy resources we have right here in North America so we don't need imported petroleum, then let the Middle East go. Far too many of our soldiers have been killed or wounded already for a people who don't appreciate the sacrifice.
There should be a way to calibrate electronic scales - an adjustment screw somewhere.
Unless you have a set of precision calibration weights, it's worthwhile to collect 3 or more bullets that cover the range of weights that you routinely work with (i.e. 50gr, 70gr, 100gr + whatever), then...
Women are more vulnerable to unprovoked bear attacks than men, in general, and especially if it's that time of the month for the women. Big game kill sites create special vulnerability for any hunter, especially in areas where bears have become conditioned to hunters. Wolves have made bears more...
I have no objection to anyone annealing their rifle brass, but I've never done it or felt a need for it.
A hundred new and quality brass cases will likely last longer without annealing than most magnum rifle barrels. Also, when loaded to within a few percent of a magnum's or AI's pressure...
Through the years I've noticed that pulling the expander ball through cases produced varying degrees of resistance during the sizing process, and as a result, saw varying degrees of bullet seating resistance. That must have an effect on consistency and SD.
For my 223, I began polishing the...
As a test, use a bore brush and a little brass polish to clean the inside of the fired case neck. Then see if that helps the expander ball pull-through when you size it. I'd bet it does. Carbon residue can make it harder for the expander ball. Different powders can produce varying degrees of...
There must be a joke in there somewhere...
30-40 years ago, I would have said my custom Remington 721 in 300 Weatherby Magnum was my favorite. For decades, no commercial hunting cartridge shot flatter. Just the look of the cartridge produced oohs and ahhs by innocent bystanders.
Then...
If you load and plan on keeping a rifle forever (or at least till you hand it down to the kids), cartridge choice has few limits. But, if your rifle isn't a keeper, I wonder about resale value of an AI. How do they do on the auctions compared to standard cartridges?
I bought my son a new...
Here's a 2009 pic of the lake that sits right on the northern edge of McCall. In fact, the main street through the town (hwy 95) takes a 90 degree left turn about a half block from (behind) where this photo was taken.
Following the big forest fires we had in 2000 here in western Montana, the elk numbers (and hunter success) peaked in 2005 as a result of the 500K acres of new grazing and a decimation of the invasive weed called Spotted Knapweed. Unfortunately, that also coincided with a wolf number explosion...
