Earlier this month I removed the SWFA 12x sniper scope from my Rem 700 SS 7RM and re-installed the Leupold 3-9x in preparation for the season opener later this month. The Leupold had been on the rifle earlier this year, and had been sighted in. The scope mounts are the Warne quick-detach style. These mounts are supposed to makes it really easy to swap scopes without losing zero. I hadn't really tested it before.

During this range session, I did something I almost never do - as a test. I shot a 5-shot group with this 7mm Remington Magnum from a clean barrel. I wanted to see whether the first couple shots were outside of the group. Normally, I shoot a couple foulers. When you think about it, the first shot is the one that counts most in a hunting rifle. Most people hunt with a clean bore.

The first shot from a clean-cold bore printed in the orange. Due to the late afternoon lighting, which shaded the target, it took us some minutes to even find the hole. I was a little concerned that the shot may have missed the paper because of the scope swap. Once the hole was found, I put another 4 rounds downrange with about a 2-3 minute cool-down between shots. The end result is that the first shot from a clean cold barrel prints to the same point of aim as do subsequent shots - and the Warne mounts are the bomb.

Normally, I try for a sight-in closer to a 3" high at 100 for a hunting rifle, but this time I think I'll leave well enough alone. I don't anticipate any long range shooting (famous last words). :)

That's great news. I've always wondered about quick-detach style rings and how well they "did" hold zero. I may very well have to take a look at the Warne rings. I always hunt with a dirty fouled barrel, 2-3 shots prior to hunting as my guns have always shot best accuracy wise. My 340 Weatherby shoots it's best from a clean cold barrel, go figure.

I usually foul the rifle barrel before every hunting trip, wheather locally, or to another state.

Same here. Mine are usually well fouled before I go hunting.

I have had the same results with the Warne's and Leupolds on the EGW rails I run. Near perfect repeatability.

I haven't tested the Talley's just yet, but they are supposed to be real good as well. I will give them a try soon though.

Great shooting BT. Looks like the big 7 is ready to hunt.

I have a few rifles that are clean before hunting. However, many require a fouling shot.

My son cleans the barrel in his 300WSM Rem 700 stainless late in the summer, then does a final range session just before the season opener. From that point on, the barrel is not cleaned till the season is over.

I didn't clean the barrel in my 7RM after the above 5 shots, and I don't have a problem with not cleaning a stainless-steel barrel, but I couldn't do it with a chrome moly barrel. The 308 Ruger Scout's CM barrel was cleaned after its last range session. BT
