Earlier this month I removed the SWFA 12x sniper scope from my Rem 700 SS 7RM and re-installed the Leupold 3-9x in preparation for the season opener later this month. The Leupold had been on the rifle earlier this year, and had been sighted in. The scope mounts are the Warne quick-detach style. These mounts are supposed to makes it really easy to swap scopes without losing zero. I hadn't really tested it before.
During this range session, I did something I almost never do - as a test. I shot a 5-shot group with this 7mm Remington Magnum from a clean barrel. I wanted to see whether the first couple shots were outside of the group. Normally, I shoot a couple foulers. When you think about it, the first shot is the one that counts most in a hunting rifle. Most people hunt with a clean bore.

The first shot from a clean-cold bore printed in the orange. Due to the late afternoon lighting, which shaded the target, it took us some minutes to even find the hole. I was a little concerned that the shot may have missed the paper because of the scope swap. Once the hole was found, I put another 4 rounds downrange with about a 2-3 minute cool-down between shots. The end result is that the first shot from a clean cold barrel prints to the same point of aim as do subsequent shots - and the Warne mounts are the bomb.
Normally, I try for a sight-in closer to a 3" high at 100 for a hunting rifle, but this time I think I'll leave well enough alone. I don't anticipate any long range shooting (famous last words).
