Update on the Smith work on the 30-06.
After a long summer repairing A/C units I finally sweaked in some time to shoot the gun. Since the scope was taken off I used a laser bore sighter to align it close at 25 yards. Later took it to the range at 100 yards. Lets just say the 180 BT load I used...
I've got 2-Burris scopes. A C4 and an E1. Both scopes have really good glass, good in dim light conditions and I like the reticles in both equally well. For the money I feel the quality is good without refinancing the house. 8)

I shot the 225 AB for a few years on Whitetail deer here in Tennessee. Switched over to the 225 PT about 2 years ago as POI is the same. I'm using RL-15, getting 2,677 fps. Love the gun, its brings the hammer down on deer. I'm sure it would be equally deadly on Elk too!!

Hey Scotty,
I've loaded and hunted with 165 BT bullets in my 30-06 too. I'm using Win cases with CCI-250 primers. My load was H4350 and I believe the charge was 59.0 grains producing 2860 fps from a 22" barrel Rem 700.
The 165 BT is an impressive deer killer too. I think some rifles, at times...
I'm excited to think about getting to the range when it's possible. My work schedule keeps from getting there. I'm glad I thought to get the rifle in there, back in June, knowing how it gets crazy close to hunting season to get any Smith work done!
Guy, I couldn't agree more on the recoil pad...
Dr Mike,
It was shooting kinda ok for whitetail deer hunting here in Tennessee. My 180 BT load was between 1" - 1-1/4"at 100 yds. The recoil pad was brutal but thought while it was at the Smith, why not get the other done too. I've been wanting to get this work done as it worked so well in my...
My 30-06 is a Rem 700 BDL, I've had for a long time. About 6-yrs. ago I had it re-blued in a flat black no glare type bluing as it was showing its age. I was able to get a take off REM 700 BDL 7MM stock off the classifieds on this site about 4-yrs ago.
I just swapped out the stocks and made due...
Thanks for the reply. You certainly have a terrific load there. The velocity is amazing considering the 22" barrel. 8) Best of luck this season. Anxious to hear your results.
Don
Have you noticed and difference in recoil from the former powder to the present RL26 ? More or less?
Also, what primer is used with your load ?
Thanks,
Don
I'm curious of the case capacity of Winchester verses Remington as I have good supply of both for my 30-06 Remington 700. I developed my loads using the win brass. Pretty sure I just can't switch over to Remington without starting all over. Is this true ?
Don
Just to chime in here with Guy, I'm getting 2788 fps with 180 BT and H4350. Mine is from a Rem 700 22" barrel. I kinda like H-4350 powder! I'm using win cases, CCI-250 mag. primers with the bullet seated out close to length of magazine. 59.0 grains.
Don
Joel,
FWIW, my vote is to stay with the proven Partition. I don't have any experience with the ELDX. But you know it goes beyond the velocity and how good it does on paper. You already know what the reputation is of the proven Partition when it encounters bone on an Elk sized animal. I would...
Tom,
Congrats on a really good hunting season. Time to give those red squirrels some attention. I always enjoyed taking the off season blues out on Crows!!
