A great cartridge it is.I have four rifles chambered in the 30-06 in my safes. The ability of this cartridge is amazing. You can load it with a wide range of fast powders, slow powders, lightweight bullets, heavy weight bullets, just a superior cartridge design created over a 100yrs ago.
Quickload request using Magpro powder in the 30-06.Magpro is a spherical double based powder that has a burnrate just a little faster than H-1000.It's a heavy powder by volume,so you can put a lot of powder in the case, much like Reloader-26.Since this powder is more available as well as cheaper...
I think Magpro might be worth a look.I haven't used it too much but I've been studying some of the Quick Load data DrMike has posted and it looks like it might be a close runner for Reloader 26.It's a real heavy by volume powder like Reloader 26.I want to try it in my 30-06's with 180gr +...
I can see 7828 working well in the standard 30-06 or 30-06 AI with heavier bullets, just never tried it myself.I have some in a metal can that's about 30yrs old,but it's still good, may have to give it a try once the weather gets cooler. These constant 100 degree temps are not good for testing...
The 30-06 is an amazing cartridge case. The bore size an case capacity makes it a very efficient powder burner. The bigger magnum cases can produce greater velocities, but it requires more powder and they are not as efficient at gaining velocity per grain of powder.Another thing that has changed...
I've had one for seven years or so.It really changed my brass prep world.I can trim, deburr, chamfer and clean primer pockets at a rate about 4-5 cases a minute. If you break down the cost of each individual tool, the price is really not that bad.I paid $130 when I bought mine.I know they have gone...
That is very true.Even in the early Ballistic Tips, those two bullets did much better than the 150gr Ballistic Tips did.Just goes to show you just a little change in the jacket design can make a huge difference in bullet performance.
Those 90's 150gr 7mm boxed at a 100 were very explosive.I shot them in my 7mag.They had excellent accuracy, but didn't hold up well in my 7mag.I shot a whitetail buck in the shoulder at 250yds and the bullet never penetrated the scapula. It knocked him down, blood coming out of his mouth and...
At the price of ammo these days,it makes it worth spending a little extra on a good rifle, stock or custom barrel that shoots good, requiring less work on load development.A person could spend a lot of money trying to get a crappy shooting rifle to group well.I know I shoot my best shooting rifles...
I'd hate to have to buy what I have at today's prices.About 15yrs ago I started getting addicted to buying guns.Prior to that time I was more into hunting with one rifle, chambered in one do all cartridge. So as I began branching out with different cartridges and guns,I've accumulated a wide range...
The only powder that really gave me a good jump in velocity in my 300WSM was Reloader 17,but I could never get the accuracy I was looking for with it.I mostly shot 165gr bullets in mine in the 3050 -3150fps range. With 180gr bullets,I'm happy if I can get into the 3000 fps range. As for long...
Reloader 26 is great with the heavier weight bullets in the 30-06.I called it good enough with this load.61.0grs of Reloader 26 with a 200gr Accubond @ 2815fps is some serious medicine out of a 30-06.
No,it's a Remington 700 that I sent to Pacnor for rebarreling.I was going to have it done in a 26" barrel. The owner Chris said he would do a 28" for the same price.I figured why not,I could always cut it down if I wanted it shorter. So I went with the Super Match Grade stainless barrel,1-10 twist...
I shot some 180gr Ballistic Tips recently out of my 28" barrel 30-06.
63.5grs of Reloader 26,Win brass,WLRM primer 3021fps
62.0grs of Reloader 22,Win brass,WLRM primer 2997fps
You can probably subtract 25fps per inch from my velocities.
I use a lot of once-fired brass. It's a lot cheaper and have never really ran into any issues using it.My 30-06 brass was purchased for .18 a piece delivered.Hard not to stock up on it at that price. When you think about it,it's better to use fired brass for load work up anyway,so why not?
Years ago,I bought a 308 Win.I made some test loads with 45.5grs of Varget with 165gr bullets.I had Winchester,Nosler and Remington brass.I didn't have my chronograph with me that day,but the Winchester and Nosler brass loads were shooting the same tight groups around .5".The Remington brass was...
The way I check the difference in case volume from different manufactures is,all cases resized, trimmed and primed, fill a case full with a ball powder and compare the fill on each different case. You might find some cases might be able to hold one or two grains more powder.Which brands hold the...
