My competition barrels, all in 308 Win, tended to get replaced at around 6,000 rounds - as I'd start seeing more 9's instead of 10's and fewer X's on my 600 yard score sheet. I let the targets tell me when the barrels were about done. The 308 is just peachy about long barrel life isn't it? :)...
I have a very old late 40's or early 50's rifle that was chambered in 257 Weatherby early on before there was brass or ammo available for it.
In those days 300 H&H brass had to be shortened, necked down and blown out. I have the dies for that and some ammo that my grandfather made with those...
Something is absolutely wrong with the neck sizing. It's either the brass or the dies.
There should be sufficient neck tension to hold the bullet securely.
Perhaps try a flat base 85-100 grain .257" bullet?

I haven't gone heavier than 165/168 in mono-metal bullets for the 30-06. Excellent accuracy, penetration and expansion with them. Have Nosler E-Tips, Barnes TSX and Hornady CX bullets on hand.
Those bullets are significantly longer than cup and core 165's. Given their performance so far, I...
Yeah - it worked out okay. I used to have the spent shell casing around here someplace. Haven't seen it in quite a while though. No harm to gun or shooter. 9mm bullet didn't exactly made full use of the 40 cal bore...

Some years ago I scooped up 6mm 100 gr and .30 cal 165's - all solid base seconds. They shot great from the 6mm Rem and the 30-06. My son took some game with them, deer & bear. The bullets did well.
Interesting stories about the original Ballistic Tip bullets not opening up. Usually I hear...
Ummm.... Got antlers? ;)
Great looking barn! Around here folks would likely call it a shop. Either way it looks like you did a mighty fine job. I'm a bit envious...

I just saw that - the part in bold attracted my attention.
Neck tension alone should grasp the bullet firmly, even without a crimp.
I think something is wrong with the neck sizing. It's not tight enough. Could be a die issue or it could be a brass issue...
Try adjusting the die, and...
Only adverse thing I ever encountered doing that was the build up of a "crud ring" in the chambers - if I was lazy about cleaning. One good cleaning and there'd be no crud ring.
Shooting 38's from a 357 is a really common thing and I don't know of any harm that comes from it.

Jim - I think the Rem 700's in 257 Roberts were short-action rifles, like my 6mm Remington. It can be difficult to load to the proper length.
OP - I suggest going to a shorter, flat-base bullet. Perhaps the Nosler Partition would work? I don't have one on hand to measure.

The 130 TTSX can shoot for sure. This was at nearly 3,300 fps from a Savage 30-06 with a factory barrel at 100 yards:
I've seen similar accuracy from 308's... So, keep trying with your rifle, be it 308 or 30-06, as that bullet has excellent accuracy potential.

Interesting. The only rifle I used that did such a thing badly needed proper bedding. It was a 308 Win with a varmint weight barrel in an injection molded stock.
That rifle would put the cold bore about 1.5" high, the second shot about an inch high, then cluster the rest in a tight group where...
