No, I don't notice recoil when shooting an animal. I have taken a lot of elk with a 300 wby too and didn't notice the recoil anywhere but the range either. I only shoot my hunting load at the range, I don't have a "range load." Some may say the wsm and wby are too small of a change to be worth...
That's no fun :) I guess my discussion is more I have the bug for picking a new mellower rifle, not that I want to get rid of the wsm. And I'm burning the load I have for that til I run out of powder haha
From my own personal experience, 30-06 vs 300WSM is noticeable. I do use a limbsaver pad. Chuckhawks lists 30-06 with 180s at 20.3 ft/lb recoil, 300 WSM with 23.8, so a 15% difference? (definitely check my math ;) ) Plus the 300wsm is .25 lb heavier. But I hear you - not as noticeable as...
I have been using a 300 WSM for elk for years and love the gun, but any more I have the bug for a mellower, lighter recoil, elk caliber. Nearly every elk I have ever shot has been within 400 yds. I grew up with the 30-06 and am considering switching back to this. Others in mind are 270, 7mm-08...
I knew there were 140 and 160 Nosler Accubonds for the 7mm caliber, but was surprised there's also 150gr! What's the thought behind having the 3? I've seen the 140 recommended alot for the 7mm-08 for elk but they all look good.
Thanks guys. I did a workup with CCI250s with RL26 one time no problem. I thought someone might suggest magnum primers being WLRs are a hotter primer, but glad to hear FED 210s are a good choice.
I haven't Ihad much luck catching anything in stock but a few bullets and limited powder. I just can't sit on the computer all day watching reloading sites, I have to sit on the computer all day working! And I'm to the point midway is gouging so bad I'll let it go if they have it.
Here's a naive question. I hear/read that some cartridges do better with short barrels, some with long barrels. For example, .308 and 7mm-08 are good with a 20" barrel, but you really should have a 26" barrel with a 25-06. Obviously all of them get more velocity out of a longer barrel, but...
I did snag a couple bags of the 115s. Thanks JD338. Brass is where I'm hurting. I had a chance to buy some nosler brass but didn't want to rework my loads but I never see WW brass so I probably should have!
I love my RCBS Chargemaster Lite, just thought I should get a backup. And BruceP I agree, a 30 minute warmup is necessary. I didn't know I needed to do that originally and my zero seemed to float.
Would the Lee safety scale make an acceptable backup scale? I've gone all digital and it feels weird not having a non-electric one for backup in case of problems. Any other cheap options? I still have my old powder thrower and trickler. I actually threw away my RCBS 505 and am regretting it but...
