As is the case with Hammers, shedding petals is great. It'll just make the petals rip through more tissue in tangent paths to the main shank, which means more damage inside than just the straight punch that it'd do if it stayed together.

I know it may be sentimental to keep it as it, but have you ever considered changing the bolt shroud to a winged safety (think Model 70)? I asked my grandpa the same thing about his sporterized Mauser and he didn't even know you could to it.
Y'know... There's a certain gunsmith I know you're aware of that does absolutely fantastic work on #1s. It's one of the things he's wanting to specialize in as well. He'd gladly accept this one ;) I'm sure he could sparkle some magic on it and have it tighten up at those higher velos
