That's funny, if your buddy hit that cow elk in the right spot, I doubt she gets up & runs away. I have taken dozens of animals from 50yds-350yds w/ my .338-06, several elk size & larger. All went down to the 210grNP @ 2750fps, all w/ one shot as long as I did my part. It's almost the perfect...
H110 is a max. effort powder & does not do well much below max. charges. I would not load less than 21gr under a 240gr-250gr bullet. If you want midrange loads, I would use Unique or Universal under a 240grLSWC.
You'll find the tip has little to do with accuracy of the bullet. The base & overall concentricty is what matters. Try this some time; take your favorite load & file the tips off & shoot them for group. Out to normal hunting ranges, there is little diff.
I haven't used the 160grNAB on any game yet (I am a partition fan) but I have fired about 100 through my .280. Best powder for mine is IMR7828, work up to 57gr. They are doing 2850fps & 1moa, but the NP shoots just a bit better in my rifle.
IMO, the 7RUM is way overbore & you would be better off w/ a 7STW or 7mmDakota. You are just burning way too much powder & burning bbls. to get maybe 100fps over the 7STW. I have a Ruger #1 rechambered to 7mm Dakota & get 3200fps w/ 160grNP using only 74gr of IMR7828. You would have to use 84gr+...
Really, the 06 with the right bullet is plenty for any PG except maybe Eland or Giraff. The 30mags only extend your range a bit & most shots will be under 250yds. The advantage of the 30mags woul d be pushing a 200gr bullet faster for even better penetration.
For me, any antlered elk is worth pulling the trigger on, but a nice mature 6pt is what i always look for. For a mulie, a heavy 4pt or better, 24" plus would be nice.
A 150grNP is too light for heavier PG in the bush IMO. The Gemsbok is a sturdy fellow. I've seen one them take a real pounding by bigger calibers & keep going. I would at least move to a 165gr premium, recoil is little diff. than the 150gr. I would prefer 180gr for Kudu & Gemsbok though.
The...
I've just picked up some .280 brass from Nosler & will let you know. I have been using Lapua brass in my .260ai (,243 neckedup) & love the stuff. It seems to be a bit better out of the box than Rem. 260, comes annealed from the factory & lasts quite a few firings.
Maybe, just maybe a heavier bullet would have given a bit better reults & less shots fired? I'm a big believer in using enough gun/bullet. I like good 165gr bullets as a min. in the .30 for elk, but prefer 180gr for better penetration, more internal damage.
KB=kaboom. There are many reports of KBs in the early Glock 40s. When you have your bbl. out, drop a loaded round in & you'll see part of the case is out of the cahmber near the bottom., unsupported. If you load hot enough, you'll see a bulge on the case that matches the unsupported area of your...
I like my Glocks, but I would never sell one of my 1911 for a Glock. The .357sig is a great cartridge offering .357mag perf. from a semiauto. I prefer the Sig pistols to Glocks, but that's pers. pref. It's a well liked round by the LEO community & will serve you well in Anchorage.
Calvin, never had any problems loading for the .40s&w or the Glock. Just stay away from max. loads using fast powders & you should be fine. I use Dillon dies, they seem to be fine.
I have chosen the .45acp as my ccw & the 40s&w for HD but it's primarily the pistol that you should be deciding on, not the caliber. All pistol rounds from 9mm-45acp, w/ good JHP ammo, provide pretty much the same results w/ center of mass hits. The larger calibers may have an edge when the...
I doubt you get to 1150fps safely in your Glock w/ PP. Speer shows 7.8gr max for 1081fps. Alliant powder site
http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/ ... ulletid=64
shows 7.3gr for 1100fps w/ a 170grXTP. HS7 will get you there, but is being discontinued. Longshot will get you...
