OU812,
this thread was actually quite informative and fun. The quality responses just reassures the quality of participants we have here on the Nosler forum.
Why did it take 4 pages to come to this conclusion? The original thread had a tackle box full of ford fenders and doc sheltons. Let's not forget the wedding ring... :?
I'm surprised nobody mentioned RL-15. After all, it is the powder used in the military's 168gr sniper round. I have only loaded for a few 308 Winchesters but RL15 has sure been nice in my 300 Savage with 180gr Speer Mag-Tips.
I had a Savage 12BVSS in 308 that shot 150gr Ballistic Tips over...
I came across one that is rather minty other than a tiny mark on the floor plate. I've never owned a 264, and have a few tang-safety Rugers now, never had a problem getting them to shoot well. This one is not anywhere near the cheap but would be a nice compliment to my existing 77's in 243...
Nice rifle Eric!
My 300 SAUM is still the same as pictured above, new glass went on a different rifle. I did end up developing a load with the 168gr TTSX and RL-17. It groups like the Hornady load and averages about 3114fps. Now, I just need to find a bullet test subject this hunting season.
I have been able to reach 2900fps in two different 300WSM's shooting 200gr Partitions and IMR4350. You might not have a need to even continue with a 200gr bullet the way that rifle shoots the 180 Accubonds though.
I use Magpro in the 270WSM more times than not, my go-to powder for the 270WSM. In the few rifles I did load 150gr bullets, Retumbo was a real winner, very accurate and low spread. It did give up some(<100fps) velocity to Magpro and IMR7828. Ramshot Magnum should be one to consider though.
Since that's a full 3 grains over max load in the Nosler #6, I'd certainly be cautious of high pressures in that load. It would be interesting to see what quickload shows for that powder charge. I'm not bashing your load, just making it clear to others reading this thread that both your powder...
In addition what others have said, notice the maximum operating pressure of the load I detailed in red(ish.) This tells me that when comparing loads with a max of 65k psi to those with lower psi or CUP limits, there can be a considerable difference in both powder charge and listed velocity. One...
I'd look at the Weaver 1-3x20. For around $170, you get a quality scope that has enough heritage to it to fit real well on that 99.
Others to consider, depending on budget:
Nikon Monarch 1-4x20 African or the 2-8x32 Monarch
Leupold VX2 1-4x20
Leupold VX3 1-5x20
Leupold VX3 1.75-6x32 (my...
the berry crop in southern Oregon has been fabulous so far! The higher elevations still have large patches of unripe berries. I haven't found a patch yet that has been hit by the bears. With so many berries, in addition to the heat, I don't think the bears are travelling far to do all they...
Scotty is right on, Magpro and RL22 will let you know what your rifle is capable of with all bullet weights. I like RL19 a bit better with 130gr and Retumbo a bit better for 150gr bullets. I haven't worked RL17 in the 270WSM but it sure shines in the 300WSM and 300SAUM.
I shoot 71.0gr of...
It wouldn't be my first choice as a moose load, but it would also be far from the last. If your load consisted of a 165gr Partition at 2700fps, then I suspect the naysayers would be almost nonexistent. Save that TTSX load as a primary load unless you can find something acceptable with a 180gr...
It was very effictive for what it was designed for, not much else though. Even considering how much I dislike the 30-30, to me the 7.62x39 rules the gallows in comparison. I wouldn't pass up a deal on a Hand-Rifle chambered in it though.
I have had great luck with IMR4350 and the 200gr Partition with 3 different 300WSM's. Two of them averaged a touch over 2900fps with good accuracy while the 3rd was a buddy's elk rifle for dark timber hunting. He had no issues with the 2780fps knowing that the bullet will hit where the...
Heck, the 220gr Partition has nearly the B.C. as the 95gr Partition in 6mm, and with similiar muzzle velocity as the .243 win, it's hard to say that you wouldn't have one of the most practical big game combinations available. With that, the 220gr NPT wouldn't be my first bullet choice for the...
