    What rifle influenced you most?

The BLR .308 I was gifted by dad on my 18th Birthday. Still have it and use it well.

    Rifles on your "want" list?

Some thing Sedgley. A Whelen on a Springfield. I have a crudely done Springfield sporter for it . Just need the funds. Would really like a pair of light weight mountain rifles, a .280 and a .338-06. Lastly, a Marlin .44 Mag carbine just because.

    Leupolds VX scopes

I have a very old Vari X ll . A newer Rifleman scope is much clearer/brighter. A newer VX2 is better still. Next will be a VX3.

.30-30 lever action, who still hunts with one?

There is something to be said for a quick to the shoulder carbine. One can glass a lot of deer at 5-600 yards, but when you put down the glass, there are often deer within 200 and then a 30-30 shines. For me, nothing comes up and fires faster than a short, light lever gun.

    Understanding SAAMI Pressures, or not?

Thank you all. I was not understanding the diminishing returns of pressure to velocity. I was thinking both would be lineal. That seems to answer the questions I had.

    Understanding SAAMI Pressures, or not?

The 280 is a good example. Clearly it can be loaded to the same speed and pressure as a .270 in a modern bolt action. I see Bullet is loading the .358 to good speed and have seen John Barness loads with Tac so I can surmise one might approach this carefully even though Ramshot does not publish...

    Understanding SAAMI Pressures, or not?

So, looking at the SAAMI website at the .358 Winchester I saw they do not have a pressure listed for it and many other cartridges. "Piezo pressure not established". I assume they are, retesting with modern equipment and have not got to some yet. I, in my very limited reloading knowledge...

    Gransel Fitz

I searched and found some info on him. He was friends with O'Conner and completed his Grand Slam in 1948. His article "Grand Slam in Rams" for "True" A Mans Magazine . Stated he used Winchester Silvertip 180 Grain. He was also a photographer of note. Did some advertising also. Another...

    My bittersweet Elk.

Thank you Dan. There is a lot of luck involved. These Elk can appear and disappear in a step, as dense and the forests are. The mist also complicates things. I do love going in after them.

    My bittersweet Elk.

Thank you Thebear_78. That is a great looking rig. I like the cheek piece to use the tall rings to get over the peep sight. Has me thinking. I will say that load sounds "brisk" on both ends.

    BLR in .358 Win.

Good to hear so much first hand knowledge of this rifle and caliber being use to good effect. Makes me more confident I can take mine to Alaska for a Moose float trip we are planning. It might cause me some trouble with my better half though. I already told her I need a Sako 9.3x62 in order to...

    My bittersweet Elk.

Good info here on bullets. Thanks. I will reload for this gun from now on. Components I ran out of are around again. I used to load the 350 Hornady to about 1700. I like the idea of a premium 350 or 405 or the Barnes 300 for hunting with a practice and deer load with a cheaper same weight...

    My bittersweet Elk.

I chose that bullet because of many good review as to it's toughness. I have lost confidence in it. Maybe, that is undeserved, as it could have been an aberration. I will never know. The terrain in part dictates a bullet that can handle hard angles. Quartering to, and away as well as down...

    My bittersweet Elk.

I was hunting in the thick, steep, dark and wet timber. Typical of Western Washington Roosevelt Elk. Late in the afternoon, the light, what there is of it was waning even though it was an hour before sundown. The canopy does the here. I scanned up the side of the ridge to my left, then down...

    BLR in .358 Win.

Thank you all for the warn welcome. I will post on my results on loading for the .358 when I get the time to focus on it.

    BLR in .358 Win.

Thanks. I know it is more than enough for the job. I have read about Neil Jones. He will likely be seeing to it. Funny thing. I have owned and shot my .308 for so long the trigger is great. I wouldn't have known what a good trigger was those years ago. Even now, it may not be great by...

    BLR in .358 Win.

Good morning all. New guy here. I treated myself to a BLR 81 in .358 last year for my 50th birthday. I purchased it for Western Washington Roosevelt Elk in the thick wet coastal mountains. It was as new and had been a safe queen for many years, with a Leupold VX2 2x7 scope. Still stiff and...

Hello. Glad to be here. My name is Mark. I live in Western Washington State. Love everything guns and hunting. I hunt deer in Eastern and Western Washington. Elk on both sides too, (prefer Rosies on the wet side though). Lurked here for a bit and like the quality of the people here. My...
