What did you use to take your first animal of other species?

Ground squirrels, Dusky, Spruce and Franklin Grouse -Remington Model 12 pump 22 rimfire, age 10 to current Wild Pig- FN 7x57. Stalking thru the tunnels they make in the tule reeds is something else. Coonhound went first.

Light target/small game load for 25-284 and 25-06 (but discontinued powder)

Having success with old SR 4759 and 25 caliber match bullets for light 1700 fps loads. I sure wish they would bring back this powder. Anyway I a had a great couple of hours at the range. These loads have no kick. 18 grains of SR4759 and a 100 grain Sierra Match bullet (2nds). The 25-284 used...

Brass can make a difference in precision

I sort my brass and bullets by weight when loading for jacketed bullets, not so much for cast. These military cases were not weighed, but the all had the same headstamp and date, even had the pastboard box they came in, so presumably were from the same lot. I haven't annealed them either, so the...

    Living Large

The Glorious 12th (grouse season) doesn't start here till next month. We have to make do with a bear hunt and picking huckleberries. No bears yet but the berries are better than I've ever seen. Easily a gallon an hour with 3 or 4 berries in a cluster. And Peaches! You remind me we have a local...

Help me decide on a new rifle caliber

Less is more. Quarter bore with fast twist. Less kick, less wind drift. 100 grain for threading the needle in the woods, 134 grain for the windy west.

30-06 QL Help Please and any help from the stands would be great too.

Not bad shooting from such an antiquated cartridge lacking all the "inherently accurate" updates of the cartridges of the last decade. Right now I have mine set up with 212 ELD x at 2600 fps using Staball 6.5. Maybe for elk season. It really likes 150 and 180 BT's too with Imr 4350.

    New camp/Truck rifle

My father in laws ruger semi auto like the 240 XTP accuracy wise. Since they also are most accurate in my blackhawk, I'd start there. However if grizzly was a possibility I think I would find some 300 grain hard cast for a lever action

    Can I use IMR4227 for H4227?

Rumor has it that IMR4227 is rebranded H4227 (which isn't on the current Hodgdon burn chart). I see some nice heavy loads for 38 special using H4227 and I have a couple of pounds of IMR 4227. Okay to use IMR for H data?

That would be excellent to hear the stories of the MC! Pretty romantic place. I guess you can B&B there now. I love that song. Tyson's song I didn't like that was set in the same area was about Claude Dallas. He was roaming the hills when we were out with the kids. Might be why the Alvord...

thanks, It was a good program. The recidivism rate for the youth was was much less than half that of incarceration and 1/4 the cost. A really fun but sometimes stressful job. The biggest stress came from the expectations of some of the administration. It was expected ALL students complete the...

    Bunny Boots

We spent a January week at Hart Mountain Antelope refuge, first three nights at their cabin doing day hikes and climbing/rappelling to get the high school youth trained for the cold. Then over several days hiked up one of the canyons to the hot springs, did a long overhanging rappel, climbed...
