I'm not sure that "lucky" is the right word. "Demanding" or "strong-willed" or "stubborn" might be more apt. That rifle was always going to be hers, but she managed to lay claim to ownership a bit before I was willing to hand it off, LOL. As I was teaching her to shoot that rifle, I...
Nice! That's exactly the model and caliber that my Dad handed to me as 10 yr old in 1972, and what is now in the hands of my 11 year old daughter. The 99F is easy to carry, shoulder, and shoot (and very hard to beat) for a hunting rifle.
My bucket list is pretty simple by comparison. After handing off my Dad's Savage 99 to my daughter this year, the only thing I'm lusting after and looking for is another Savage 99. Would prefer to find one in a .358, but will probably settle for a .243 or another .308 and then turn it into a .358.
You might give Shawn Thomason a call. He's about 3 hrs south of you (in Craigmont ID) and is known for doing very good work. (He's the smith who's name always comes up when talking with shooters and gun gurus down here...) His turnaround times are generally slow, but he's good. 5 minutes on...
Interestingly enough, TC made their Icon (predecessor and higher end version of the Venture) in 6.5 CM so at one point so were among the first on board of that cruise. When they dropped the Icon line, I assumed the 6.5 CM would show up in their Venture but it never has. I've got a TC Icon and...
Go to the website and get it ordered -- will be the best $60 you've spent in a long time. Pretty cool accessory for the spotter. I've got some great pix and video of animals at well over a mile away.
This would be a good fit.

I've had one on my 6.5 CM for 4 years now and really like it. Bought a second one (illuminated, 2.5-10) for another rifle that does duty in dark timber and brush.
If your weather is like ours (warmed to mid-teens and snowing) tomorrow would be a good day to go out. I made a run to town this afternoon and saw two loners sitting fat, dumb and happy 150 yds off the road. (If I had any sense at all would have taken a rifle along with me.) Will probably...
Nice. Another thought -- he may not know exactly what he likes to shoot or how he will end up using the rifle until he's had it for a while and put a lot of rounds down the tube. If he buys a good, popular scope with good re-sale value (something like an SHV) he'll likely figure out what he...
In that $1k price range, he's got a ton of great scopes to choose from -- many will do what he wants. I believe that most in that price range will have glass that is sufficient for his needs -- I suggest that he give some thought to the distances he wants to shoot and how else he'll use the...
I do pulled pork a little differently than you (on the grill instead of the crockpot) but usually braise with some kind of sweet liquid for a couple hours of the cook. After reading this, tried root beer as the braising liquid for our last pulled pork. Came out very, VERY good -- the root beer...
If you can stretch your budget to $450, I'd recommend a pair of Maven 8x30s.

I got a pair last winter and have become a huge fan. They've spent a lot of time afield with me this past year in all kinds of conditions, and had I to do it over...
A great option for getting kids (or any new shooter) comfortable with rifles and hunting is a Savage 99. Available in a handful of different calibers, this rifle carries nicely, shoulders and points very naturally, and is a lot easier to make follow-up shots than a bolt action. It's a pretty...
After pondering a stock swap for my model 75 and doing a bunch of research, Accuflite was at the top of my list. (Went a different direction and sold that rifle, so don't have any hands-on experience to relay.)

I always wondered the same thing as the OP, so ran a little qualitative experiment last spring after acquiring a pair of Maven 8x30 binos. I pulled them out one afternoon/evening watching 4 deer moving around on a brush covered canyon wall about 300 yards away from the house. Sitting there as...
I haven't had a lot of weight in it yet, but after running around with 35# in it while scouting I'm quite impressed. Very comfortable, and the hip belt is awesome. There's an enormous amount of adjustment options with this thing -- should be able to make it fit about anyone comfortably. (The...
If you're still considering pack options, my pack (Seek Outside Revolution) showed up this week, and after playing with it for a couple hours am impressed. It's an extremely versatile pack setup, and looks to be set up to do whatever you want. I'm putting mine together for a mountain goat...
I had a similar pack dilemma getting ready for a mountain goat hunt. Ended up getting a "Seek Outside Revolution 4800".

From what I've read and studied, looks to be pretty versatile and very comfortable -- will let you know what I...
