    Spring Elk

My work keeps me out on the back roads of northern Idaho on a regular basis. This time of year is always fun because the elk are all congregating in the lowlands as the snow disappears, and this year is no different. (As a casual observation, looks like it was a nice winter for elk as I...

Let's see those long-range hunting rifles!

Here's what I use as my long range "everything" gun. It's a TC ICON Precision Hunter in a 6.5 Creedmoor. I swapped scopes right after this pic -- it now wears a Leica ER 3.5-14 instead of the Zeiss shown. I really like this setup -- so far, it does everything I want it to do. (The scope will...

    The BEST deer cartridge!

Nice wisdom to start the day! I read thru this, and the first thing that came to mind was that the opposite is also true -- a poorly placed shot, whether it be from a 40-yr old 30-30 with duct-taped stock or a $3000 custom rifle, makes for an empty freezer time, and time, and time again.

    Why not more shotgun talk?

Yeah, that used to bug me (enough such that I bought and sold a couple different OUs trying to find the one that would work for me). In the end though, I've chalked it up as a blessing, as I figure I've saved quite a bit of money by keeping a good semi-auto in the gunsafe rather than one of...

    Why not more shotgun talk?

I grew up shooting Trap with my Dad and brother -- started as soon as we were strong enough to mount the gun for a full round of 25. As an adult, it seems like it's one of those sports that drop off my radar screen when "life" gets too busy, but ALWAYS comes back around. (I think a big...

Is it worth the upgrade to a VX3? or "Talk me out of it"

It's only a "deal" if it's something you need. If the existing scope does everything you need for your application, save your money. "Deals" come and go daily.

    scope opinions needed

You might take a look at this Sightron -- pretty much checks all the boxes if you like that reticle. I've not owned any Sightron scopes, but they have a reputation for offering a lot of bang for the buck. (The bench rest crowd is pretty complimentary of their turrets and tracking as well.)...

    Eastern Oregon Ranchers being railroaded

It's hard to get an un-biased report on anything surrounding what's taken place in Burns, and the death of LaVoy Finicum is a prime example (one report says he was on the ground with hands up and unarmed, and a second says he was out of the door of the vehicle he was in before the vehicle was...

    Eastern Oregon Ranchers being railroaded

Sounds like things are pretty tense down there right now, with people wondering what's going to happen next. Sending a few prayers that direction for cool heads to prevail, and that this end peacefully from her on out.

    High performance Clothing?

I'm with Gene -- merino wool base layer and a neck gaiter. I've ditched any synthetics and UnderArmor base layers -- they don't work nearly as well for me, and aren't as comfortable. My typical winter outfit when outdoors in the cold are the "Smartwool" brand merino wool tops and bottoms, and...

    Eastern Oregon Ranchers being railroaded

I don't disagree with that. Emphasis with both the BLM and USFS the past couple decades has steered away from managing public lands with western users (that make a living off those lands) as a priority, to putting those users low on the totem pole in favor of other interests. Would be nice to...

    Eastern Oregon Ranchers being railroaded

Maybe, but I'm a bit skeptical on that one. There are enough anti government folks around itching for a fight that feds masquerading as militia doesn't make sense to me. (One militia group that has shown up since this all started has already been shown the door by the Bundy group, and members...

    Eastern Oregon Ranchers being railroaded

I'd be very surprised if the Federal folks are the ones to escalate anything in Oregon, exactly BECAUSE of how Ruby Ridge and Waco transpired and turned out. The Feds are playing this very low key, and simply waiting this out. (Interestingly enough, I don't see things blowing up due to anyone...

    Eastern Oregon Ranchers being railroaded

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at the spectacle of the standoff in the eastern Oregon desert. It's going to bring some attention to the manner in which the federal government manages public lands in the west, but I'm not sure that the net effect of this attention is going to be...

    Maven B3 8x30 Binoculars

I've been shopping for a pair of hunting binoculars for a while now, wanting to find something that's not too big and bulky, is an asset in dim light, and doesn't break the bank. I've been waffling back and forth between the idea of a good pair of 8x30'ish and 8x40'ish binos, knowing I'm a lot...

    China birds and snow

Very nice! I don't know about elsewhere in the NW, but I've seen more pheasant this year in N Idaho and E Washington than I have in the last 20 years.

Equiptment Advice - getting serious about varmints/predators

Nice choice -- That ought to work! I think you'll like the medium weight 22" barrel a lot more than the heavy 26" of the Savage -- the Ruger with the 22" barrel will be balanced a lot better. As far as scope, can you get the Meopta and Zeiss scopes you noted with exposed turrets for dialing...

Equiptment Advice - getting serious about varmints/predators

Seems like about 1/3 of the 12 twist .204's I'm aware of struggle to shoot the 39s/40s, so you're experience is not too far out of the norm. I've not heard too many that didn't get pretty dramatic acrobatics with the 32 gr pills, so that's a bit surprising. I've had both a .223 and a .204...

Equiptment Advice - getting serious about varmints/predators

If I was looking for a .204 and had it to do over again, I'd probably buy the Thompson Center Venture. They offer the .204 in couple different models -- all with 1:10" twist. Can be found from $475 (blued sporter barrel) to $550 (camo finish, fluted barrel). I have TCs precursor to the...

Equiptment Advice - getting serious about varmints/predators

It's kind of "luck of the draw" as to whether the factory 1:12" twist barrels will stabilize the 39 and 40-grain .204s. Some shoot them great, and some don't (and it's not consistent with a given manufacturer.)
