I popped the action out of the stock to give it a look-see. It looked like the front and rear action screws had a pretty tight fit at the top of the hole so I ran a drill through it to give them a little clearance. Also found the bottom of the action just in front of the rear tang had a pretty...
Yep...the first 1''-2'' of the barrel in front of the recoil lug is supported. I'm going give the bedding a closer look to make sure.
It has given me 0.50'' groups at 100 yards in the past (maybe a handful of times), but not consistently. I might be expecting a little too much out of a...
Got out this morning to continue a never ending quest to find a decent load for my 25-06. After running a few sighters through it at 100 yards I shot this 4-shot group. Normally, I'd get a little excited if the first 2 shots are touching, but I knew better with this gun...it didn't disappoint...
Retested the Remington case loads today. The groups size and velocities were pretty consistent from the other day. I bumped up the powder charge in the Winchester cases which got me a little closer to the group sizes with the Rem cases, but it looks like they need another 0.3-0.5 gr. of...
Loaded some up tonight. Bumped up the load to 59.3 & 59.6 gr.
I noticed something tonight going through some old targets. Back in June, this load at 58.5 gr went 1.30'' at 200 yards (same as today at 59.0 gr). I'm guessing this jug of powder is a touch slower than the last jug even though...
I've been searching for some R-19 for a couple of months...none to be found. IMR-4831 was the next powder on the list to try (I still might). I've got some other loads worked up with some H-4831sc that I'm gonna give a go Sunday. I don't think I'll get the velocity R-22 is giving me, but I'm...
Got 'er out this morning. Had 1 load that gave me a 1.4'' 5-shot group at 200 yards.
Same powder charge, COAL, primer, with different make of brass gave me a 3'' 3-shot group at 200 yards. At least I'm headed in the right direction I guess.
Got out this morning run some loads through the 280. This was the first time I've had it to the range since bedding the new B&C stock. I've mentioned here that I've had some consistency problems lately with this rifle (or my reloads...depends on how you look at it I guess).
I loaded up 10...
My Grandpa hunted everything from coyotes to elk with his pre '64 .243. He had other caliber choices but always grabbed that 243. You made a good choice.
Anywhere from seating depth, adjusting powder charge up and down in 0.30 gr. increments, to cleaning the bore a little more often. With the 280...I'm hoping the new stock (that has since been bedded) is the ticket to a little more consistency, that and I've swapped my RCBS full length/seater...
I'm glad I found this thread.
I've been doing more research into OBT. I seem to be having some issues with developing a consistent load for my 280 & 25-06. I can find a load that will shoot sub moa one day, go to retest it on the next trip out, and it prints like a shotgun.
Makes sense to me. I hear ya on the rear tang. I did the 3rd round on it last night and I looked at it this morning and it's still not the greatest but it'll work.
