    308 to 7-08

I've done the 7-30 conversion before, and while that looks somewhat like it, I see a couple of issues. First, there are multiple steps on that shoulder, instead of just two (the original shoulder/neck junction, and the new shoulder/neck junction). On that case, there is a second bulge down...

20" BBL, Short Action, Best Predator Cartridge

If you're going to go up to the 260, I'd advise you go ahead and consider the 7mm-08 as well. It is readily available in short action bolt guns with 20-22" barrels. Can't imagine a better round for the purpose and distance, if you're talking a primary medium game rifle with varmints thrown in...

    Rebarrel Which Company?

You might check Douglas in WV? They're good barrels and they will do the work. Not sure what their schedule is in terms of turnaround, but worth a check. A friend of mine has a Douglas barreled 257Wby that prints tiny little groups. They did the whole job for him.

    How low can I go?

Just a quick check shows that both the 55 and 70gr will be slightly overstabilized in the 10-twist. I suspect it won't be a problem, and accuracy won't suffer much if at all.

    Zeiss Terra, etc

I'm kind of interested in an opinion from a specific perspective. Charlie, I know you're pretty unimpressed with the Terra lineup. If your budget were $400-500 for a big game scope, which would likely put 3-9x40, 2-10x40, and maybe some 4-16x40 scopes within your budget, what do you think is...

    mandatory retirement account

The die was cast back when SCOTUS declared that the federal government can force you to engage in commerce or penalize you with a tax. This is the coming centralized control. Do this or we will penalize you with taxes. "This" could be retirement accounts, purchase of insurance, goods, or...

A look around the area I've been hunting

We don't have Diamondbacks up this far, Rodger. They are down in the coastal plain area. The rattlers we have here are Canebrakes (also known as Timber Rattlers), and we are on the edge of the range for Pygmies. I don't care for either, though few Canebrake bites are fatal, much like the...

    2014 Hunting Pictures

@Scotty - I hunted with my 300Wby, 30-06 Colt, Win94 30-30WCF, and my dad's old 243Win Browning BAR. I managed to score with the 300 once and the -06 twice. I should have had a deer with the 30-30, but I swear that dadgum thing had rapelling gear and a harness on to get where he was behind me...

A look around the area I've been hunting

I've been in this lease for four seasons, now, and it's been a real ball. It's only 360ac, but it's also only 6-8 members annually. I've never been there with more than four guys hunting on the same day, so it works out well. Many days I have the place to myself. It's a mountain lease, with...

    2014 Hunting Pictures

Well, the Alabama season wrapped up Friday, and I managed to fill the freezer with three white-tails. No big bucks - in fact, no bucks at all except one little nubber I thought was a doe until I got to him after the shot. Nubs were barely big enough to see. He'll eat nicely, though, as we've...

    what caliber to rebarrel?

Truth be told, with bullets suited for comparable purposes, the 270Wby is as flat as the 257, and offers 25-30% greater bullet weight.

    30-30 Fans

I've had good results from a couple of boxes of factory 160gr FlexTips a friend sent me. I'm now down to four of them, and will be switching back to my old stand-by 150gr Speer Hot-Cor handloads again. I use Win748 in mine, but I've also had good results with BL-C(2) and Accurate 2520.

    Why do I want one?

Adding to 6mm's comment above, I'll just say: Because it's one of a very, very few you have not owned yet. Key word being "yet."

    Long underware

Sorry, Elkman. Yes - I'm referring to the comments above mine about Sierra Trading Post (STP) and their presence on FaceBook (FB). If you see me refer to LI, that's LinkedIn, which is more or less a boring business version of FB.

    Bedding an action

Anybody put much stock in what Ernie the Gunsmith is saying in his series of "Gunsmithing Odds and Ends" as seen here: http://www.erniethegunsmith.com/catalog/c41_p1.html He seems to have some validity to what he's saying in terms of building the right foundation and taking two steps to get...

    Long underware

Tom, I just bought a pair of Asolos from STP, as well. I'm currently somewhat proud and at the same time ashamed of the "total amount spent" and "total amount saved" numbers I saw within my account. Over the past three years, I've managed to save about what my first truck cost...and that's...

    Long underware

To be absolutely accurate, I don't own anything from UA. Not that I have anything against them, I'm just too cheap to buy UA gear. I own some UA-type materials, which I find very satisfying in performance. I've not felt cold in them, even this winter when it was single digits and I was hiking...

    Long underware

My use is different here in northern Alabama, where temps generally range from 15-25 for the lows to 40-60 for the highs. I like a wicking layer as a base layer, and polypropylene or some of the newer UA-style materials work best for me. I tend to hunt fairly actively so I worry more about being...

Not Sure What Bullet to Load

The Partition is as it always was, a great bullet for controlled expansion and weight retention on medium to large game. No surprise there. The Ballistic Tip is, more or less, a replacement for the Solid Base. Accubonds are just a bonded core version of the BT design, for the most part, and are...
