A few weeks back I picked up a Remington model 700 SPS varmint with a 26" barrel. I love it. Already developed one load for it, 52 grain A-max and its awesome. Shockingly, my old Nosler 60 grain varmint loads originally developed for my AR (I no longer own because of the wonderful state of...
One more recommendation, Knives of Alaska makes great knives that are under your price limit. Specifically the Alpha Wolf is superb. They are available in D2 and S30V steels. I was able to do a cow elk with one and did not need to touch up the blade in the middle of the job.
I'm a traditional fixed blade guy and don't have any experience with the removable razor blade knives. But I have friends that use them and love them. If your looking for something a little more robust buck makes a few blades with s30v steel that are superb and likely within your price range...
I haven't been very successful with big game in 2016 so a buddy invited me to his property to hunt turkey. Needless to say it's only 12 acres and shotgun is not preferred by the neighbors. So I took my bow and with a little spot and stalk, stuck one around 10am. I can still harvest one more...
Now that you mention it, the readings were taken in August and this past Sunday. It was about 30 degrees cooler and while around the same time the angle of light was likely different. So maybe the difference I am seeing is a compilation of factors. I'll try and do my next round of tests on the...
I'm basing that off my experience with some TTSX loads. Once fired were right around 3150, maybe a hair under with once fired, neck sized brass and right at 3000 with new brass. I'll have to find my chrono data to be certain but that's what I recall.
I went back and checked and I was at 3100...
By the way, I just want you all to know this is the most helpful forum I have ever been a part of, so thanks for taking the time to provide great input to not only myself but all that come here with questions. Much respect to Nosler and the people who make up this forum.
Honestly I've never exceeded book loads. I'm not against it by any measure but I've always gotten pretty darn respectable velocities from the published data. Like I said, I will redo this test with once fired cases, and I may give the Winchester large rifle primers a try too as that is what is...
I've been thinking of adding a second powder to the list and IMR 4831 keeps getting recommend. Next time I am wandering around the powder counter at my local store, I'll grab some.
So I loaded up some Accubonds using RL-19, CCI large rifle primers and seated per Nosler's recommend depth. Charges were 1 grain incriminates from 48 to book max of 52 grains. All shot in a Weatherby Vanguard with a 24 inch barrel. Except for the 48 grain load all gave me sub 1 inch groups, 52...
Not in a not lead area but all of California will be no lead for hunting by 2019. I've tried developing a load for the etips but cannot get the same accuracy as the TTSX. I will say that my attempt was limited to a few different powder charges and then I set the etips aside. The Barnes shoot sub...
For elk and deer I used my Hoyt Maxxis 35 (archery season is already over for me). However, rifle season for deer started last weekend so I am using my new Weatherby Vanguard in .25-06, pushing Barnes 100grain TTSXs around 3200 fps. I am also carrying my 10mm loaded with federal's trophy bonded...
I would recommend the Kuiu Ultra 1800 or Icon 1850. They are super light (just over 3lbs) durable and comfortable. I think their best feature is the load sling that when combined with the packs carbon fiber frame will allow you to easily carry an elk hind quarter. All of the Kuiu packs utilize...
I have an update on load development for the etips in my .25-06. I tested a couple different powder charges at .100 off the lands. While I didn't measure the group with a caliper (my target is gridded out with 1/4 inch squares) the best group appeared to be just a hair of 1 inch. I think for now...
Not the report I was hoping to give...opening weekend of archery in California's D3,4 and 5 zones was a bust. I didn't see a single deer. Found lots of fresh sign though. Might get out one more time before I'm off to Idaho for elk. When I return the .25-06 will be going on its first of many hikes.
SJB, thanks for posting this info. I saw that you posted in my thread (New Member with a .25-06 Question) I appreciate your response. Nice to see some more E-tip work with the quarter otter.
Joel, I hate to disappoint you but I loathe living in California. I grew up in north central New Mexico, went to School in Wisconsin and lived in Colorado for a short while (my mom and little sister now live in Colorado. I have been to nearly all 50 states. Living with 40 million people is my...
