35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

I’m waiting patiently for some partition 225 grainer blems to show up on SPS but they seem to be a rare item. I think they would be my ideal bullet with all the horsepower needed and a little flatter trajectory. But, the 250 Speer Hot Cor isn’t a bad bullet either especially if I can...

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

Yes Sir. I read how it was a great bullet and highly recommended by Yukon Moose hunters but will still expand on deer size game. I got them on sale for $16.49 per box of 50 which helps too. I’m going to be using the Whelen as my black bear hammer over hounds so having too much gun over...

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

Agreed. I went with the Whelen because it performed well at moderate velocity without kicking the snot out of you. I’ll give it a go with the CFE223 to see how it behaves but, I’m not looking for a 358 Norma Mag either.

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

I’ve read conflicting accuracy reports with the CFE223 but it will get the velocity. I guess AA2000MR is more consistent and accurate with the velocity. I have a full pound of CFE223 on hand and will give it a go. I also have a bunch of Varget,748,RL17,H4350 and RL15 will be in the future...

Added another Lever Action to my Stable

My first was a Winchester 94 AE 30-30 and it was miserable. My dad was an avid reloader and that thing went down the road quick after turning in 6” groups at best. It was replaced by a Rem 700 BDL ‘06. I’ve owned a Marlin 450 Marlin Guide Gun that was a shooter and I’d love to get a 45-70...

    Straight wall cartridges for hunting

Interesting perspective. I grew up in the extreme north west portion of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. You’d need to look at a map but on the Keweenaw Peninsula. All rifles that far north but it’s mixed cover. Thick cedar swamps, open hardwoods and rolling hills of ancient Hemlock and White Pine...

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

I have three boxes (150) of Speer 250 grainers coming. The RCBS dies are already in the old Rockchucker and I have 100 ‘06 brass bumped up and annealed. The anticipation is killing me. I looked at the Speer data for 250’s is crazy. 2700fps with a 250 will be a freight train. I’d be content...

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

Not yet but he’ll get back soon. Think he said 6 to 8 weeks or so. I’m going standard chamber and 14” twist. A full 24” SS #3 contour or whatever most closely matches the current barrel. Shilen said a 14” twist will handle 310’s and won’t be finicky. If I want to go AI later I’ll just have it...

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

Yes I know it’s about time. I kept telling myself that. I might go 24” but likely won’t go AI. With the load data with AA2000MR, RL15 and others it seems plenty as is.

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

And, it didn’t help much when JD338 let me oogle his 35 Whelen Classic. A little motivation to say the least.

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

I finally have what I need to start my 35 Whelen project. I’ve off loaded a couple rifles (savage axis 6.5 Creed and Ruger carbine 243) to make room and get me some cash. It will be built on a Ruger M77 Hawkeye SS action. The action has been already smoothed out and trigger has been cleaned up...

    Straight wall cartridges for hunting

As stated it is a measure to reduce the range of lethal energy so to make a “safer” hunting environment. I live in Michigan and this is a continual debate when all factors are considered and it makes for an absolute nightmare for the DNRE. You have cartridge development such as the 450...

    Favorite 7mm08 deer load.

Most accurate and deadliest on whitetail for me was a max charge of W760 CCI 250 and a Speer 145 gr BTSP. This was out of a Rem 700 CDL 24” barrel. I shot probably a dozen or so deer with that load and they all dropped on the spot or within fifteen feet. Nothing too far, maybe 200 yards. Must...

    Pheasants

Salmonchaser. I always spoil my dogs. I even managed to spoil my working dogs when I was in the Air Force. They work harder for you and listen better. And, you don’t need to worry about them taking off on you if they know they have a cushy couch at home.

    Less than pleasant subject

As stated by others. It will happen. Keep in mind that nothing goes to waste in nature. You might not get it but something will. I’m sure shortly after you gave up some other critter was feasting shortly there after.

    25-06....educate me please!

I had owned one for years but not currently. Dang fine round and wouldn’t hesitate on anything up to elk with a good bullet.

When Did The 308 Win Become Trash?

Like so many things in this world today there is a lack of respect for elders, tradition and history. Nothing wrong at all with the old .308. I don’t shoot one but I certainly wouldn’t feel under gunned or out classed if I was carrying one. But, I hunt differently than most and everything I do...

    Favorite.243 load for deer hunting?

This has been discussed before I am sure. I’m just getting to the 243 game so this is why I’m asking. I never had been drawn to the 243 for whatever reason but I recently inherited my dads Ruger M-77 Carbine SS in 243. It’s accurate and being so compact is a very handy package for still hunting...

Had to put down my dog today

I’ve been off the site for some time so this is late. But, still worth the condolences. Dogs are wonderful animals and are a hard loss. I have had dogs all my life and worked them in the military as a young man where they have saved my skin on more than one occasion. They are some of best...

    Ruger PC Carbine 9mm

Good job taking your time with her and getting her to make the step up. I would have also recommended a 77/357 Ruger bolt and shooting mild 38’s. But your 9mm carbine is much like the 22 she’s familiar with. A red dot would turn that carbine into a dandy home defense gun. The extra barrel...
