I have been using 1084.
I’ve tried 1095, and 52100, but I’m heat treating in a forge, and the more you get away from 1084 into other steels, the more you have to have precise soak times.
So 1084 it is for now. I have a pretty good routine that has shown good hardness, and the ability to get a...
I really like tru oil as well.
I use it for my knife handles. It really does bring out the grain, and it really seals the wood very well protecting it.
And it lasts.
I had a friend who asked to help refinish his Grandfather’s rifle. Apparently he fell while hunting with it and broke the butt...
Around here as I see it, basically if it has hooves it is big game.
Squirrels, rabbits, and such, small game.
Turkeys, and waterfowl have their own seasons.
Measure what your magazine will allow and see how that matches up.
I’ve also understood that the Barnes like a bit of a jump, and not being close to the lands?
Starting at Barnes recommendations of 2.735 is a good starting point in my opinion.
My COAL is around 2.813.
I also just measured some...
I had trouble finding a load with the 130 grain ttsx’s for my Tikka compact 308.
I first tried loading with Varget, because that is what I use for the 150 accubonds, and works very well there.
Muzzle velocity was around 2730 for the accubonds, and they were very accurate.
But NewYorkistan is...
I’ll call this an update, but I haven’t done any other testing to verify whether it is temp stable.
270 yards ranged, around 30ish degrees out, six minutes legal shooting left, 1-6x24 Skinner lpvo
From what I understand, there also is a “junction” of nerves? Or nerve bundle? in the high shoulder area that is an “off switch” when hit.
That is where I hit my Buck from this year, and he didn’t take a step.
The shot did cause a loss of some backstrap, and shoulder meat from both shoulders...
I’m on my second year with mine.
It is in my vehicle, basically, all fall.
Unfortunately I have not had a chance to use it - for a deer.
We use it quite a bit for yard work and such.
Many uses, and hopefully I’ll get a chance to use it for a deer.
We always hunt mornings on opening day, and after that maybe once or twice.
I prefer going in mid day, and hunting evenings.
To simplify my thinking, in mornings Bucks are traveling from food to bed, and in evenings, traveling from bed to food.
I feel that they are more predictable traveling...
I’ve been playing around with developing a new load for my .308 Win and the 130 grain Barnes ttsx for a couple of years.
This summer I was able to find something that my rifle liked and it payed off.
About 20 minutes before legal shooting light was done, I was watching a young Doe graze the...
There are various types of leather conditioners available that could work.
I would try and avoid food oils as some can go rancid.
Neatsfoot oil is what I would recommend for leather.
Also it sounds like the wallet may be thick?
A half inch empty wallet is kinda thick and if that is the case...
I unfortunately had to attend a funeral last week for the Mother of a friend.
I was able to get to the range after the services and test the load for accuracy.
It was a beautiful sunny day with temps in the 50-60s
My rounds were in the sunny vehicle for over an hour, which I’m sure reached into...
