    Fire fail

I pulled the bullets on the three dud rounds and tried them in my Ruger bolt gun. Two of the primers went off and one did not. All the primer marks looked alike but when looking closer about half of the primers are backed out a little. This gun is used and new to me. I am wondering if I have a...

    Fire fail

I was out shooting some PMC 223 yesterday and had three out of 50 rounds fail to fire. That was a new one on me. Anybody else have something like this happen to them? Gun was a Remington bolt gun.

    Missing My Dad Tonight

My father was lucky in that he got a free trip to Germany but the war had ended before he got there. His best friend, who had a huge influence on me, was not so lucky. He was a marine machine gunner in the pacific. Got wounded late in the war and sent home to heal up. After he got out he joined...

Big Game Rifles & Loaded Rounds ?

I use a 35 Whelen for just about everything and so does my son. He does not reload so I try to keep 500 or more ready to go. That way after he puts me in the oven he will have plenty to last him for a while.

35 Whelen vs. 35 Whelen AI vs. 338-06

Given the larger choice of bullets in 338 I think you have made a good choice. I like being able to use cheap pistol bullets for light plinker loads in my Whelen but if I did not already have, and love, my Whelen I would build a 338-06.

    44 mag

If the gun is biting you in any way you need to fix that. Getting bit when you shoot will do nothing good for your shooting quality.

35 Whelen vs. 35 Whelen AI vs. 338-06

For a regular hunter and not a guide he seemed to have way more than his fair share of goat ropes with them. To the point that those who knew him called him Brown Bear. I never saw him act like he was very excited when dealing with a bear but let him get a fish on the line and he went nuts:LOL:

35 Whelen vs. 35 Whelen AI vs. 338-06

As you can tell by my handle I am a fan of the 35 Whelen in a mauser action. One winter around the mid 70's my father loaded up a 50cal ammo box of Whelen ammo. All of it was max load of 3031 with a Hornaday 250 grain spire point. That was about all he and I used to hunt with for the next 40...

    44 mag

If you are new to shooting pistols do not expect too much early on. You will get better with practice, a lot of practice. A 44magis a tough way to start with their recoil. I would get some 44 special brass and reload light loads. Your shooting will improve much faster if you are not fighting a...

    44 mag

When I first started shooting pistol silhouette I used a blackhawk 7.5 but it just did not fit my hand very well. Switched to a model 29 but it only lasted two years. They just did not hold up to lots of full house loads. Last 44 was a DanWesson 10 inch. Now that held up but it was as big as 500...

    44 mag

Lately I have started shooting 44 special loads through my M-29 for a fun load. I have found full tilt 44 mag loads to be not much fun in a 4 inch M29 but it makes a good carry gun out in the woods. If I think there is a chance I might need a lot of pistol power I carry my 500 with 380 grain...

Might there be a single great powder recommendation for both rifle reloading?

I know and follow the start low and work up rule but have a question with the 6.5 creed. Both Hornaday and Lyman show 40.0 of H4350 as a max load with 147s but Hodgen online is showing 42+ as max. Seems like a pretty large spread and am wondering why?

Most times I have been there I have seen Elk. Every time there has been lots of deer and turkeys. Always nice to see wild game in other parts of the world. It is beautiful country but it does seem to rain just a bit.

    Brown Bear Hunt

I may have posted this before but Phil carried Big Nan while guiding this year. Gun Digest has asked him to do an article on it for next years book. We thought it would mean more if he actually carried it. Turns out he even had to use it as a stopper but I will let him tell the story. I love...

I have never hunted Elk but I have always thought they were good looking animals. I have a good buddy that owns around 500 acres in an Oregon valley. He does not hunt and will not let anyone hunt on his land. The elk there will let you drive up to them within 50 yards and not be spooked at all.

    35 Whelen new loads

One thing I have always done when hunting around salt water is to hose it down with fresh water at the end of every day. Does not help to clean and oil them if you don't get all the salt off of them first.

    35 Whelen new loads

This is the Whelen my father built for me 40 plus years ago. FN 98 action, Douglas premium barrel, Timeny trigger and a Fagen stock. After all the hunts it has been on I am surprised at how well it has held up.
