Survivors

I note that they are not segregated into separate herds just yet. Always good to see a good escapement of stock for the future. I hope to get out with my grandson to do a bit of elk hunting in the next couple of months.

I think he's a good one too. He was about 450 yards so it's tough to get a good pic. He has really good fronts and good width. Definitely a shooter.

Nice bachelor herd. They can still be enticed to come explore a good cow call, but they are no doubt tired and hungry by this point.

I have never hunted Elk but I have always thought they were good looking animals. I have a good buddy that owns around 500 acres in an Oregon valley. He does not hunt and will not let anyone hunt on his land. The elk there will let you drive up to them within 50 yards and not be spooked at all.

Do you know where his place is? He might be a neighbor!

Thanks for the pictures. We saw many elk in the Starkey unit, but not any spikes for us to harvest.

Elkton. Valley just a couple miles out of town.
Well not a neighbor. Elkton is probably 450 miles west south west of me. Great country down there in that South West part of the state, Good Roosevelt, Black Tail deer and Black Bear country.

I didn’t have a tag for Starkey first season but took my nephew hunting. He and his dad drew the tags but my Brother in law died just before the hunt. We found quite a few elk, nephew was holding out for a good bull. We found one but he missed his shot. He was having a pretty hard time with the loss of his dad, was talking to him, if you will, when he squeezed the trigger. The back ground through the fog, behind those six bulls, is the Starkey unit.

Most times I have been there I have seen Elk. Every time there has been lots of deer and turkeys. Always nice to see wild game in other parts of the world. It is beautiful country but it does seem to rain just a bit.
