Thank you for sharing. Great pictures.. This young man will realize the satisfaction of rolling his own rather than picking up a box of ammo at the local gun shop. Looking forward to more updates.
Wishing him and his mentor the best of luck. Rol
I knew we could count on you Guy to keep the media straight... The '06 has been my go to rifle since embarking on the trips west in pursuit of elk and mule deer, and glad to have made that choice.
Have, up to now, resisted the temptation to "upgrade" to a 35 Whelen as suggested by a noble...
To mount my socket i found an old fashion Square head 1/4" bolt, fit nicely in the 3/8 drive socket that I was mounting. A little painter's tape wrapped on the shank keeps the socket wobble to a minimum. Good luck, Rol
I use a battery operated portable drill with a socket mounted in the chuck to hold the case.
Portable propane torch with fine tip flame provides the heat source. When I started I used Templaq
to insure that I was not overheating. Now I turn the case in the flame while counting 1 0ne thousand...
A load of 56.6 gr of IMR4451 under a 180GR Nosler Partition shoots sub MOA in all three of my 30-06's. Velocity in the 24" barrels runs right around 2,750fps. In the Ruger Number 1 with its 22" barrel the velocity averages around 2,683fps in new cases, just over 2,700 in once fired cases...
Same situation back in June 1997 Guy...my left calf. Never did figure out the cause. Listen to the doctor and best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
I will be hunting elk and deer in Montana after helping Rodger and will likely get a NY big game tag for deer and black bear. Bear are occasionally seen in NYDAN's area where I hope to hunt if I hunt NY.
As a young lad I always hunted with my Dad as long as he was able. Small game first, then Whitetails when I was old enough. Enjoyed those days very much, and wish that I could have them back.
It was after my parents passed and family responsibilities were behind me, I booked my first elk hunt...
My tags arrived and I am anxious to head west..
The mountains are calling and I must go.....
Big decision is which rifle(s) to bring. The Remington 700 CDL took my first elk and Mulie, the Montana ASR took my elk at long range, (for me). The Ruger Number 1 is a sweet shooting accurate single...
I currently have three 30-06's.. and use 180 grain Partitions or Accubonds. First is a left hand Remington 700 CDL purchased for my first trip to Montana in 2013 for elk and deer. Then I decided that I "needed" a rifle with a three position safety that would lock the bolt closed while hunting...
Tom, I have Kenetrek Hikers and Mountain Extreme for hunting, wear medium weight wool socks and have never, in 4 years, had a blister. Just my personal experience. Some time ago I read a suggestion, may have been in Elk Hunting Magazine or such, don't forget to trim the toe nails a week or so...
We will be about 24 miles south of Alder MT. hunting National Forest land. That puts us roughly 50 miles north and west of Yellowstone National Park. I am looking forward to showing Rodger around the area and just being in Montana again. Upper Canyon Outfitters, Donna and Jake McDonald have a...
Congratulations on the draw, sounds like you are well on your way to a wonderful trip. Will you be guided or unguided? The 180 Partition will serve you well. Best of luck. Rol
IMR 4451 has been excellent in my 30-06 with 180gr Noslers. Added benefit is less copper but more carbon in the barrel. H4350 became non existent in my area.
Being limited to deer an elk I select the Nosler 180 Partition out of my 30-06. It has served me well at long range, (525 yds) out of my '06 and equally well on Whitetail at 70+/- yds nearly complete pass through length wise. The 180 Accubonds would be a good alternative.
